Three Mile Lake father-son tournament

Yesterday was the first tournament that I had ever been in and needless to say the first for my six year old. The event was held at Three Mile Lake in Union County and put on by the Iowa Bass Anglers. The event was first class in my opinion and I will be putting in for next years event as soon as possible.

My son and I brought in five bass over 4 1/2 hours of which only two were keepers. All were caught in the timber on a Rapala DT-10 that was craw colored. I thought we would definitely be out of the hunt with only two fish, but was pleasantly surprised to find that many teams had come in with only one or no fish. Apparently the fishing was tough all over the lake. For our age group (5-9) we placed third with 5.33 lbs. The winner weighed in at 6.77. If one of our non-keepers had been a half an inch longer he would have been legal and I believe that would have been enough for us to win. The overall best team of the day amongst the three age brackets brought in a limit of four fish that weighed in at over fifteen pounds! At any rate, it was a good time and I heard one team even caught a 50″ musky on carolina rigged senko. You never know what may come out of Three Mile Lake.

This was my third year of fishing this tourney in the past 4years (didnt get signed up soon enough last year and missed out) and opted to take my 6yr old niece this year. It was a tough day on the water, especially for a walleye fisherman chasing bass like his old high school days. We didnt weigh any fish, but still had a blast. As I say every year, it is just so much fun to get a kid into this tourney and they get TONS of free stuff just for showing up. Lots of zeros on the board, including ours, but two years ago me and my little cousin had one of those 1/8″ fish that kept us out of the money. Oh well, still fun even if we sucked that day

I think it was just luck that I started to throw the Rapala. It worked up in Minnesota a couple of weeks ago on suspended fish, so why not. Otherwise I probably would have struck out with tubes and soft jerkbaits. I agree with the free stuff for kids. I couldn’t believe what my boy left with. Good luck in the future, and I ride around in a black Lund Mr. Pike16 if you see me out and about.

Sounds like you hit it right with the Rapalas though! Good job. I think I remember seeing you now that you mention the boat….I am hard to miss in my ugly old white and blue fish-hawk and 25hp outboard

I remember that boat. I believe we started in the same flight. While I’m here, a neighbor brought over a flyer for the Tri-County Bass Open Tournaments last night. Apparently this is a once a month tournament held on Wednesday nights at various lakes. Just wondering if anybody has knowledge of it.
