Iowa City White Bass Bite

The white bass on the Iowa River in IC are in the middle of their spring suicide bite. I was out this morning for about two hours, and probably caught fifty or more. Live minnows fished on the bottom were the bait of choice, but crawlers and crappie tubes caught fish also. I don’t think much of white bass in the skillet, but they are fun to catch, especially when they hit like this. Now if the Macbride crappie would wake up from their doldrums…

Nice Report! What was the biggest one you got? Macbride crappies are starting to go very nicely!

Most of the white bass were males (milting like crazy) in the 8″-12″ range. I got a few larger fish, probably females, of around 15″. I’ve noticed in the past that the larger female white bass bite more consistently in the fall than in the spring, and that seems to be true again this year. I am guessing it is related to their spawning behavior.

In the trivia department, I also caught a 9″ spotted (Kentucky)bass Friday morning. I catch one or two of those per year right in Iowa City. (Along with a smallmouth here and there.) I wonder if the spotted bass can establish a population well downstream from Macbride and the res., or if these catches are just strays.
