Well I made it out this afternoon and did some open water fishing, I started with an ice jig under a bobber with a waxie and first cast was stripped, so I had some spikes and put 3 on and never had to rebait agian. I caught gills every castbut really had to sort through them, I then switched to a crappie jig under a bobber andcaught about a dozen crappie and some bigger gills, I ended up keeping 9 crappie and 18 gill. Biggest crappie was 10 1/2″ and biggest gill was 8″. Between me, my wife, my son came over and invited his best friend, there isn’t much left, but bot was it good. Now’s the time to get out and wet a line, it was a blast.
I need to gete a newultra-lite rod, I was using a 30′ ice rod and got some funny looks.

Ed, were you bank fishing or in a boat? That was the last place my Dad and I fished together back in 1968.

Bank fishing right at the boat ramp, but they were catching them all along the chanal to the main lake on both sides.

They always move into that channel by the boat ramp when the ice goes out. I’m from Tripoli and know Sweets really good. Haven’t been out there lately to check the ice. Is all the ice melted?

As far as I could see out on the lake the ice was gone, I’m thinking about going out on Sunday afternoon again.

Went back to the marsh today and the bite was hot, met Gramps, and Rich from Waterloo there and Icejohn showed up later. When we started the little bluegills were biting as fast as you could throw in, after awhile I switched to a crappie jig and the gills were bigger.
After lunch the crappies picked up, didn’t count how many I kept but we’re having them for supper. It was a beautiful day to out fishing, and it was nice doing it with friends. I go back to work tomorrow, road cons., so I’ll be back to weekends and rain days for fishing. Hope some fo you guys were able to get out today.

Ed, talked to my buddy who was over there yesterday. He said the place was packed with people. He went over again today but the bite was alot slower and the rain didn’t help much either.

I was called back to work from winter lay off today, I can imagine it was pretty cold out there fishing. The way the weather sounds the fish will probably move out to the main lake by the end of the week so the fun will be over. It’ll be strictly weekend and rain days fishing for me now.

Fished sweets last wednesday night. Was pretty much a flop. Tons of 4 inch gills all over but didn’t have small enough bait nor did i want to waste time with them. ended up catching 2 6 inch gills while we were there then left and went to look for turkeys.
