Ended up with 60 Crappies caught over 9 inches. Also a bonus one just shy of 14 inches. My jig slipped out of her mouth just as my dad slid the net under her. The clown jig has been out performing my other jig selections. The fish really made it shallow the last two hours of the day. I’d say the best fishing days are upon us given the water temp. for Crappies & Bass. Has anybody seen similar results in their favorite local Lakes?

we were there saturday and caught 20 and none over 8.5 inches …nice to get out but we try and limit to keeping none under 9 inches so we let them go

Was out at MacBride shore fishing for about an hour on Sunday. No crappies casting jigs. A little bass and a bluegill attacked, several others tried and missed.

The lake renovation project really cleared up the water – I’m very impressed. Now if there were only fish in there, we’d be set!

it’s amazing how one end of the lake will hold a different year class then the other end of the lake.
I think this year the bigger Crappies have been on the south arm of Mcbride.

At Hawthorn the far north east end definitely held the bigger Crappies.

I new to the CR metro area. Could you guys tell me where Hawthorne is? Also, any other smaller lakes that are close to CR(besides the Mac and Coralville) that would be worth trying. I mostly fish for gills and crappies. Thanks

Hawthorn is a pretty good haul, probably about an hour and fifteen minutes (ya think?) from Cedar Rapids, to the Southwest of Iowa City.

Other lakes in the area? Pleasant creek out between Palo and Center Point is an awesome bluegill lake, and when you can find them, it’s got some great perch fishing also. Crapppies used to be in there in good numbers ten years or so ago, but I don’t think the lake is managed for them, and so they really take a backseat to the other predator species (it’s loaded with muskies, bigguns too, and lots of bass, mixed in with a few monster catfish).

Hmmmmm… where else do I go? I guess if I’m driving more than the 40 minutes it takes me to get to P.C. I just head for the big river.
