Just curious if there’s any Red Rock and Rathbun guys here. I just found this site and got registered. I sure am looking forward to catching some slabs this spring.

Welcome to the site of sites.
Make you a deal, you give me your hotspots on Red Rock and I’ll give you mine on rathbun.March 21, 2005 at 10:07 pm #351293Herb, sounds like a deal. I wish I could offer you more, but can only offer a few as I don’t know the lake well at all. I have 2 ice seasons in worth of info at Rathbun, and not a lot on the Rock. Just moved to the area a year ago. I can tell you one thing, I did find the slabs early last spring. We started getting into them around april and it went till the water shot up at the beginning of June. How bout you shoot me a PM and we’ll go from there!
March 22, 2005 at 2:30 am #351346a little rusty don’t fish it as much as I used to, but I would check the whitebreast area and roberts creek, then find the old gravel roads that end up at the lake at least shore bound those are your best bets. Red Rock anyway,
March 22, 2005 at 4:21 pm #351439Never have done much at Roberts Creek. Fish just seem to run small for me over there. Never have found much size. White Breast seems to be the ticket though on the lake!
Nirrad, where are the old road beds you’re talking about at? Only know of the old hwy 14.
Thanks
March 24, 2005 at 3:27 am #352013just find a gravel road that leads out, roche st. hickory ridge. are two I remember, and of course old hwy 14
March 24, 2005 at 4:41 pm #352110, I’ll do some looking and give it a shot. Thanks
Nirrad, have you even found any sort of a consistent wally pattern there? I’ve heard to try and fish them similar to the rathbun eyes and go shallow.
March 29, 2005 at 1:47 am #353010good luck finding any real eye pattern over on RR….I know of a few spots where they are caught off and on, but nothing consistent. I have put MANY hours in on that lake and havent found one yet…and I fish walleyes all over the state consistently. Lots of fun wiper action though with some big cats coming pulling cranks!

March 29, 2005 at 3:37 pm #353113I hear you there on the cats Goody. I thought I had a couple 8-10# eyes last year on while trolling. You know the rest of the story. I end up netting Mr. Whisker!
I’ve had better luck below the dam on the eyes. Just won’t give up on them in the lake though.
Goody, they claim there’s a pike population in the lake. Any ideas on where to find them or start looking. Never heard anybody talking about them. guessing they’re probably tougher than the eyes.
March 29, 2005 at 3:43 pm #353118Below the dam is where to go for any consistency on eyes for sure….
Pike…they are in there, but never caught one myself. The ones I have heard of being caught have been accidentals fishing for other things like bass and wipers. They are just castoffs from the river system that make their home in the lower lake. DOnt think there are enough to even try to target them. I got one out of saylorville two years ago pulling cranks in shallow for eyes….a solid 5lb class fish, nothing special but a lot of fun.

March 30, 2005 at 2:26 am #353310I’m with Goody I have pulled a pike out of red rock years back and I was fishing for bass, he was only about 12″
May 10, 2005 at 3:20 am #362165Wipers/white bass should get going out on Red Rock here in the next couple of weeks…usually around Memorial day is great for them trolling cranks and spinners. May be camping there this weekend…maybe Rock creek though….depends on the weather and how crowded it is (since it is free camping weekend).

May 10, 2005 at 3:16 pm #362267Goody, it’s so refreshing to hear them called White Bass. It just amazes me how almost EVERYONE calls them Stripers around there. Some will even argue and swear that they are stripers. I’ve tried explaining the differences to a lot of people. It’s a lost cause though. I just need to learn to let it go.
Anyway, some guys were doing pretty good on the “stripers” last week. I even picked up several that were went 16-17 1/2″.
May 11, 2005 at 3:49 am #362431Yeah, they just dont understand the difference and the more you try to help them the more they resist. Oh well….sure wish there were some real “stripers” around here…now THAT would be some FUN fishing!
I struggle at times to tell the difference between the whites and wipers (even doing the broken line thing it is hard to tell)….I just lump them all in the white bass/wipers category to be safe
They sure are fun fish though….pound for pound some of the fiestiest fish out there…especially once those wipers get over 15″!
gooy
