Well, the last 2 days the lake I live on has been slowly thawing from the sides. For some reason last night about 1/3 of the lake thawed and today I was lucky enough to get home from work early at 515. I grabbed a rod, 2 jigs, some pig and a pointer 78 to at least cast and in about 45 min had 6 hits, and caught 4 bass from a halfway iced over lake. It was great! Cant wait to really get going now that ive “wet the whistle”.

JJ, Gotta like getting the long sticks out! Any size on those fish? The Jig and Pig normally coaxes a larger than average bucket mouth. Were you slow swimming or jigging them? Ran down to IOT for my weekly visit today and the ponds still had a skim of ice on them so I’m pretty envious of your report. Good thing I have gone to the dark side and fish Walleye and Trout as well. Have to keep fishing when we have this period in between safe ice and open water on the lakes and ponds. Most rivers and streams are open.

Acutally, the jig and pig wasnt really effective- i was on shore and there was slop weed on the bottom and around the cover. I had one hit the jig, caught all of them on the pointer. They hit on the pause- sometimes up to 10 seconds without moving. Nothing big- 14″ tops. I have not ventured to the “dark side” yet, although i will hit a trout stream off and on during the winter blues. Usually i spend the off season sharpening and replacing hooks, doing my honey dos and trying to build up enough points with the wife to fish during the summer.

It is a suspending jerkbait made by lucky craft- awesome cold weather bass bait in my book based on success last spring, last fall and yesterday! You can probably get similar results from a husky jerk, rogue, or strike king lure. If the water is clear and cold its tough to beat.
