No, this isnt a bad Ike post- just wanted to let you guys know that the pond/small lake bite is still on- i went out for about 3 hours today on an 18 acre lake and caught 38 bass. Most of them were 12-15″, a few 8-11″ and only 2-3 16″ but it was a blast. My hands were quite cold (water temp 46-48 on a cheap thermometer) , and my thumb hurts now that it has thawed, but it was good to feel some (sluggish) pulling. Most of the fish seemed to be suspended over brush piles, pallates, and on points. They didnt seem to want a jig or a senko, but were happy to bite on a suspending jerkbait about 78 mm in length . Most fish were in 6-8 feet of water, although some were caught in 2 and some over 12-14 feet. All in all, more than i can expect on Nov 14th.

    Thanks for the report…

For years I gave up on bass by the 1st of October. You are right, they are there and still feeding.

The water around Des Moines is also about 46/48 degrees… hopefully this week’s cool down will bring it to the low 40’s and perhaps trigger a walleye bite.

    We will see…

Thanks again for the encouraging report..

Nice work JJ. Normally its a Jig and Pig for me if I’m bass fishing in a lake or pond this late in the year. Had some very memorable days in December working a jig and pig in water that had a skim of ice on it when I started…Good to know the suspending jerkbaits are working. I’m still catching Smallies and Walleyes on the rivers so I haven’t tried out the lakes or ponds for a month or so. Last time I did the Micropterus salmoides were really stacked in shallow bays with inlets just hammering large spinnerbaits. Nearly as fast and furious was a crankbait bite casting parallel to steep shoreline breaks. Guessing those patterns are gone for the year but are always something I try in the month of October.
