Last week I had the oppurtunity to fish a farm pond that had not been fished in about 6 years. The temps were in the 50’s but don’t you know it, the wind was blowing hard. (Is it just me or does it always seem to be windy?) The pond is about 2 acres with depths of 20′. I tossed out a minnow/bobber and was also casting a 3″ Sassy Shad (White/Black Back) I caught a number of largemouth bass in the 2-3 lb range both on the Sassy Shad and the minnow/bobber. Casting the Sassy Shad, I had it almost to the shore and you know how that last few feet to the bank you don’t pay as close attention, well a fish grabbed the bait and about scared the beegeezuz out of me. The fish stripped line and I thought I had a big ol bass. (I was using a 6 ‘ 6″ ultralite with 4 lb test)
When I finally got the fish close enough to see it, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was the biggest crappie I have ever caught and I’ve caught some good ones in my day. I didn’t have a tape measure or a scale, but I would guess the fish was close to 20″ and 3 1/2 #’s or better. It’s mouth was a big as a mayonnaise jar lid. Don’t It Figure that I didn’t have a camera with me. I did let it go as it was full of eggs. Went back to the pond a couple of days later and all I could muster was a couple of 12 inchers. I will catch that fish again, and when I do, I’ll have the camera.

    Way to go Zamer..
My best crappies also came out of a small pond. I remember reading somewhere that crappies are not supposed to do well in a small area. Apparently the eat all the small fry and end up squeezing out the other gamefish. They overpopulate and growth gets stunted by a lack of resources.

Good theory I guess, but not confirmed by my experience (or yours!).
