Kevin, does anyone fish in November up there or is everyone hunting waterfowl? Just wondering how the fishing is in October and November, and what types of techingues they use to catch fish.

I would imagine that casting cranks would be pretty darn good

We’ll freeze-up by November. The docks will all be pulled by Halloween. We were icefishing by Thanksgivivng last year.

Jigs and minnows are a bigge in October byu the bridges. I’d like to try big creek chubs on lindies. Frogs are big too in fall.

I put my boat away sometime in October. You just can’t hunt waterfowl and fish too and be successful in either. You can do both if the weather cooperates. Scouting for ducks and geese takes time. Not enough daylight that time of year to get it all done.

A lot of folks hunt on Devils Lake so you need to be aware of that. The backwater areas, cattail flats, main points, and along the treelines.

    Scott,

Was out there last year around the 14-15th of November. We stayed at Woodland and had to bust a bit of ice in Creel Bay to get to where we wanted to fish. We were using large plastics (4″-6″) on jigs and the eyes just pounded them. Would almost rip the rod out of your hands when they hit. Didn’t get any trophies, but had a few in the 4-6 lb range and many smaller.

Glad I have the Hamby’s keel guard on the Ranger, as ice is pretty sharp. Put a few cuts and nicks in the keel guard, but the boat and motor came through fine.

Hoping to get out there a bit earlier this year. The weather in ND is just too unpredictible that time of year.

Plastics have been quite successful in very cold water conditions…just before ice out and ice in. When I say before ice out I mean when all you can get in the water is a 12 footer over the rocks. Sounds like Opie got in just before ice in. I was icefishing smaller bays Thankgiving weekend for perch. That was the best perch fishing of the year.

I may try for early October, maybe just after the RCL Championship. I don’t want to be breaking ice, although this year that could happen in September.

    Where/when is the RCL Championship?

Look me up when you get here. Maybe we can do a half dayer between hunting and scouting during the weekend. Perhaps nail a few beers.

Sounds good Kevin. The RCL Championship starts September 29th on the Mississippi out of the Quad Cities. I think we launch on pool 16 in Moline.
