Heads up to all who have fruit trees. Last week we had an explosion of japanese beetles at my place. They feed on the leaves of the trees. They will not kill the trees, but will defoliate it quickly. I am hitting all my fruit trees tonight with Sevin spray.

Yes, the b@stards showed up in force in my little vineyard last week. It was sooooooo pretty before they showed up, the nice pretty vines on the trellis.

You’re right, they do not kill the trees or vines, but they make everything look like hell.

My best solution for keeping them away has been Sevin powder because it stays on the leaves and really discourages them. But of course it has to be reapplied after every rain.

I hit the apples, pears and plums last night with Sevin and the beetles we dropping like rain shock I haven’t seen a crop of beetles like this in years. They are also hitting my young birch trees as well, in fact, they are hitting them the hardest. I hit everything pretty good, so hoping I got a good kill on the majority of that population.

I’m not sure any pesticide is “pet friendly” per se. I would certainly keep animals away from any treated foliage when it is wet. I’m not aware of any specific dangers with pets and Sevin, but the label will give specific information on animal and livestock exposure.

Personally, I like the powder because it has longer residual staying power as a repellent vs sprays which mainly kill the existing bugs. But it is more difficult to apply, I spent pretty good money on a duster that throws out a very fine cloud of the dust, but like liquid spray, there can be a drift.
