Is it worth buying frozen shiners, or do fatheads work just as good this time of year? Heading up next week and was curious. Does Log Cabin carry them?

just about everyone has frozen shiners. never buy live ones they die right away anyhow. My top minnow up there is Rainbows. They are a little bigger they are durable and they offer the fish a little different food option. Shiners are very productive seeing how the river and lake are full of them but they are defiantly not the only minnow that will catch fish up there. If you are going up there with snowmobiles frozen shiners are easy and hassle free.

Thank you Allan! That’s exactly the kind of info I was wondering about!

Frozen shiners usually work better than fatheads. Sometimes saugers disagree, though, and it is nice to have a live minnow on the dead stick.

Something else that works for me a lot of times is frozen shiners and live fatheads or rainbows on the same hook. Don’t go out with preconceived notions. Let the fish tell you what they want and bring several baits.

one more thing fatheads are nice for the couple perch you get. I also always have waxies with me when I am fishing and this year I caught a 20 inch walleye on a mud bug and waxie. waxies can land nice walleyes when you see a lot of bugs in the fishes teeth. Its a little secret that I happened to stubble upon by accident thinking that marks on the bottom were perch. I have been using it more and more and have done well on nice walleyes when there is bug hatches ice fishing.
