Just some friendly maybe unique tips that would work for everyone things you do to prep for the new year. Ice shelter zipper freeze what to use, frosted windows in portable, what type of grease or oil on your reel, keeping frost off one pound tanks with old crown royal bag, keep ice off auger blades ect…. a little bit of everything. I’m sure everything has been mentioned before but wanna put it all on one topic. Whata you have lets hear it.

Spray Silicone is a great all around tool for ice fishing. You can spray it on most everything to prevent freezeup. Zippers, the skirt around a flip over, spray and buff it onto the windows(test on a small area of the window first in case there is a reaction or hazing), etc.

Never heard of the Crown bag trick but sounds like it would help.

I’ve heard of using chapstick on zippers to keep them from freezing but seems like it would be kind of messy.

Open water I have a tube of Vaseline chapstick, smother the lips to keep em soft and supple for the FW then the eyelets get a coating to minimize freeze-up, does a darned good job. Will be employing this tactic to ice rods hole hopping this year.

Save this for when you get the “you think more about fishing then us” rant. If you haven’t gotten that yet A) you don’t fish enough B) you haven’t been married long enough. It’s coming.

I used the chapstick on the zippers last year and it worked great. I put it on real heavy and ran both zippers all the way a couple times and wiped of the excess. Didn’t make too much of a mess. When I used to use cheap reels I would clean all the grease out with hot water and put light gun oil in them never had any issues even when it was -30. I would love to know how to keep my auger from freezing.

Repack hubs with white lithium grease.

That’s probably the last thing you’d want in wheel bearings. White Lithium is not made for high speed/high temperature situations and is not rated for wheel bearings. You want an actual wheel bearing grease such as Lubrimatic Marine Wheel Bearing Grease

Should I consider myself lucky that I’ve never had problems with a frozen zipper? I didn’t realize there was such an issue.

I like nhamm’s idea of vaseline on rod eyelets though.

I’ve run a bar of soap up and down the zipper a few times, works great and won’t stain your jacket or clothes like grease would..

Joe nailed it, bar of soap. I will also use a candle stick to keep my zippers running smooth. Chapstick works pretty good on your rod tip to minimize freeze-ups.

Keeping ice off the auger blades can be greatly minimized by giving the auger a quick spin after each hole to clear the slush and water a bit. I have a Nils/Tanaka, so once the ice and slush starts building up, it no longer wants to cut. I make sure I give it a quick spin on top of the ice after each hole and the problem is solved.

LOL…It’s for the HUB style fish houses! Not wheel bearings! It’s actually perfect for this application. Take apart the HUB and pack them with white lithium grease and it may save u a broken pole or two.

Clarification goes a LONG way! wave
