What’s everyone running for a froggin rod? I’m thinkin a 7’4” heavy would do the trick.

Brand is up to you. I have a gloomis imx , and a duckett for frogging.
    Length is 7ft to 7ft6
And I prefer heavy. I fish heavy nasty stuff in my area with frogs and dont qant them to dive

Just make sure you spool it with heavy braided line.

I’m guessing that he meant just for his personal preference.

Hell of a lot easier to walk the frog, Personal preference.

Also can use it to skip under docks and trees.

If you can skip a 7’3 heavy action baitcaster under docks and trees – you are way more skilled than me for sure. I’ve seen a few fishermen skip with a baitcaster but on much shorter rod and softer action

Guys, I know I can use whatever I want as far as brands – I was just curious what everyone was using.

I’m actually thinking a MOJO Bass 7’4″ heavy fast action.

Dobyns Champion 735 or 736. I prefer the 736 for those long casts into the slop. The 735 is a little more versatile rod for things like swimjigs and heavy topwater like Whopper Ploppers.

Some people really like the Dobyns Fury series 735. I haven’t held one but I have a couple of their spinning rods and they’re a steal at $90-100.

Dobyns are very nice rods. I also just ordered 2 sixgill rods 1 for frogs

I use Tuned Up Custom Rods. My frog rod is a 7’6″ heavy, fast action. I have a 8:1 Diawa tutula spooled with 50# suffix 832 braid.

I used to use a Cabela’s branded heavy rod which was fine.

IMO, a heavy fast rod is essential for quickly lifting the fish out of the cover. The fast gear ratio real is very helpful for keeping the fish up while reeling in. A lot of people say to use 65# braid, but I have never had and issues with break offs for 50# and I can get more line on the reel.

Looked at the Dobyns and they seem very nice. I’ll definitely put them on the list.

Heck I use 40-50 and never break off. It’s the Upper Midwest, not Lake Fork or the Cal Delta.

I agree with bass thumb. I use 30 to 40 lbs depending on my casting distance. 90 percent of fish are less then 5 lbs. I’ve never broken off due to a bass in weeds only a pike

I use a 7’2″ MH. I like the MH better than the heavy because it’s a little easier walking the dog with the frog. I also feel it gives you a little longer on the hookset which is always good when frog fishing. Just make sure you’re using at least 40 lb braid and a fast reel. I use 65 lb braid but it’s not for the fish. It’s to make sure I can cut through the crap I’m trying to pull the fish through. As for the length of the rod I like to keep it around 7-7’2″ because it’s easier to move the frog using a downward rod motion (the way I like to do it) without hitting the water or the side of your boat.

My frog rod is a Shimano Compre but I have also used the Dobyns Fury and been impressed with that as well.

Scheels rods all the way for this guy. Can’t beat their warranty. Anything 7 to 7’6″ Heavy Fast Action, paired with an Abu Garcia SilverMax and 30 to 40lb braid

My frog set up is st. croix legend 7’4″ paired with Abu Garcia revo rocket and 50lb braid. Two things you need is a rod with some backbone and high speed reel.

    Drop the microphone…

ALX Zolo “Toadface” 7’-2” Fast. Rod tip is MH so you can cast hollow body/light lures far, and also ideal action/length to walk the dog. Middle and butt section are HEAVY action to get you out of the slop when needed. So it’s a MH-H or “MH+”rated rod.

I hated my tip-heavy AvidX and LTB St. Croix frog rods and sold them to buy the Toadface, what an improvement!

Seriously though, I did have to check out what it was. Never heard of those. They look nice. Have you used any of their rods before this one?

Yes, I also have the Zolo Dragger for bottom contact, hard-head/Biffle Bugs and the like. Excellent rods, Zolos are very comparable to Kistler Helium rods.

ALX has a number of different model rods, but their #1 seller year in/out is the Toadface. It’s obviously great for Frogging, but secondary uses are jigs and Chatterbaits.

If you read the reviews on TW about the 10 models in the Zolo lineup, about half the reviews are specifically about Toadface. Has kind of a cult following on other web sites like BR and BBC.

No rod is for everyone, but I haven’t talked to anyone yet that doesn’t love their TF…
