Anybody fish this phenom in the fall lets talk tactics and location. What triggers the migration and is it happening now. I am wondering how the drought has affected it I would think with recent rain they should be moving. I fish north central wisconsin.

Walleye love frogs, sometimes I’d say they eat just as many as bass.

Target Walleye just had a good excerpt on frog fishing. I usually don’t see frogs in their stomachs until after the first hard frost/water temps high 50’s. Whichever Comes first. Fishing the Red River with frogs, you would put them on a similar rig you would use for channels. River 2/0 hook, lip hooked frog on a no-roll 1.5 oz sinker.

I’d like to try frog fishing out in the Alex area, but haven’t. Haven’t seen many hoppin around yet.

I see this around me in prairie type lakes. end of oct/early nov…. we just throw suspending jerk baits and jig N plastic to the shorelines where we see fishing occasionally busting the surface.

they swim down rivers and streams around here, end up digging into the mud in the back bays. twitch twitch pause the pull a rapala or other floater under the surface and pause. black and white has been my best color.

We would hammer the walleyes in shallow when the frogs started their migration. I just used shallow crank baits and jigs and twister tails. THe migration probably wont start until we get much colder weather. I have seen some toads appear to be entering that mode so who knows. I had one crawl under my patio and other burying itself in my yard.

We go out with Spooks, and Frogs around this time of year at night and can get some nice sized fish. A couple buddies have pulled 30″ plus fish on topwaters this time of year.

For me its just a general pattern of fish moving shallow and into defined areas. Composition of the bank seems less important as the initial depth from the bank going right into that 2-3′ zone. Water next to low lying areas that’ll hold more frogs during the summer than your typical forested area can be hot. Tactics don’t seem to matter, they’re up there to eat.

Nothing like pulling out big a$$ frog femurs from some walleye bellies.

I agree w the colder the better, but that could again just do w seasonal patterns. Been chasing this bite for awhile and can say I maybe have hit it a couple times hot, other times are still good but not fire. Always worth getting out, see a guy with a cane pole pulling original raps dam near on shore that’s probably me!

A few years ago we hit a frog bite on the Chippewa River. A buddy had heard from his dad about it being a unique way to catch shallow eyes…so we gave it a try.

It was a couple hours before dark and we were throwing dark green and black spinner baits into the mud bank that overhung a sandy flat adjacent to the channel, ricocheting them into about 2′ of water and they’d get hit on the first blade wobble.

We were catching 15″ to low 20″s walleyes every third cast for a couple hours. We’ve tried to replicate it multiple times with mediocre luck. We had luck with a medium sized Mepps spinner as well. The water temp was in the high 50s and it was one of the last days of September. We verified a couple frogs in the fish we cleaned.

I used to fish the migration.. the frogs would cross the hwy from the swamp to the lake… the walleyes were waiting in the shallows of the lake… easy catching for sure. chased smash

That is exactly what I would do too. When I saw frogs jumping across the road at night, then I knew it would be on. Havent done it in decades though.
