We had our second annual fishing tourney this past weekend. About 6 boats, 2-3 people in each boat. I was humbled by a 11 year old fishing in an old duck boat, without any electronics or trolling motors. He won the tourney. I used to fish when I was a kid, in a inflatable boat with a 3.5 horse Johnson motor on it (No electronics) and I would do quite well. Now I am sitting here with i-pilot, down scan, side scan, GPS topo maps….

It was nice seeing a kid win with just the basics!

I had one of my best days results wise, out of my kayak. Bouncing from fishing out it, to shore fishing as needed. Right spot for crappies, then switched over to walleye. Had several big boat guys laugh at how much work I did to paddle up river past them, but they were all quiet later when I shared how the day went.

I haven’t had that much fun, or success in my big boat in a long time.

Has anyone heard the myth/truth about fishing graphs? The old flashers used to barely send any signal to read a depth. New ones ping the bottom so hard that they physically hurt your body if you swim below one. You can’t tell me this doesn’t affect the fish.

Maybe if we used the new rods, presentations, small motors and less sonar, we would REALLY be slaying the fish!

If that were true, none of us would ever catch a fish. It’s myth, bar talk, bovine excrement, whatever you want to call it. I have a challenge for you. Go ahead and remove the sonar from your boat and let us know how that works for you. roll

I’ve messed around with fish in shallow water ice fishing where I would have the transducer smack dab over their heads in 2′ of clear water while I was turning the sonar unit on and off. Their was absolutely no signs of awareness of the sonar pulse or absence of it. I’ve hung my ‘ducer in a minnow bucket with the sonar on and watched the minnows use the ‘ducer for shade.

    In my opinion… myth.

yeah this came about some time ago during the flasher wars. vexilar owners warblegarbling about the power of the marcums about how it hurt the fish with so much power.

its a myth as far as i’m concerned.
