So we were talking about sayings and idioms the other day and there’s a phrase that has me puzzled. The saying “the $hit hit the fan” – we’ve all heard this and probably said it. But I’m curious to know… is it that the $hit is hitting the ceiling fan cuz it’s stacked so high? Or is it hitting like an oscillating fan and spraying everywhere? OR does it actually involve a box fan somehow (with or without stickers )? Let’s discuss. Who’s got answers!

Or is it when a RAM goes through the dryer at the car wash?

Puzzled? Cmon Sharon, it shouldn’t take a Rhodes Scholar to understand the poop hitting any fan is less than ideal.

I think it just means it’s splattering everywhere and just got extra messy, quickly.

Or to Bigwerms point ~ a rel life situation. My colleague at work was a school nurse. Office was hot and stifling, down a hallway, go to the right 3 feet then left into her office. Used a box fan to draw the air down the hall from the main office to try and get the cooler AC air. Kid comes down the hall, sick, turns the corner where the box fan is and spews all over. Gets sucked into the box fan and becomes vomit spray. Funny? yes. Less than ideal result? For sure. Vomit/poop hitting the fan nothing good comes of it.

A history teacher told us years ago that “the $hit hitting the fan” was a marine phrase in WW2 for the turning point in a battle.

Well i don’t know exactly but i’m sure it came from a woman,right after her husband walk through the door drunk.

Hmm I could see this being a thing. Lots of sayings have a nautical origin!
