Freezing eelpout

    I’m bring home some pout from LOW and I keep running across comments that I shouldn’t freeze them? Kind of hard to eat 3-4 at a time?

    I have always froze mine. Never had any issues with taste or texture

    I’d guess he knows how to freeze them or not freeze them. Pretty sure he is asking if it’s OK to freeze them because others are saying not to

    Probably a given but if you bleed them first they are much easier to clean because the tail doesn’t keep rolling up

    Fresh low pout are delicious. Put them in the bucket with your walleye for a couple days and they are dog food. I’ve tried it a couple times with the same results.

    Freeze mine every time I get them on the ice for a day or 2 till I get home then thaw and clean. Currently have one frozen from LOW to clean tomorrow.

    How was the walleye fishing up there mark and Vern? Anything of size or typical dink city?

    Over half were walleyes, a 19,17,16 the rest were OK. Saugers all 11-14. Two 1/2 days, my friend John and I out of Arenesen’s 22 keepers many dinks.

    I have the best luck if I bleed(knife through skull) and clean b4 they freeze. Vacuum seal and freeze. Boil in 7-up then salt and butter.

    Thanks all, I boiled some fresh pout in 7up and water, then sautéed it in butter in garlic. It was great!

    When I saw your post about freezing Eelpout, I thought maybe you found him in the ditch on his way home from the libation station.
    Last time I saw him he was doing pretty good but that was Feb of 2022,in fact, I have a pic of him down here ice fishing a pond.

    Bearcat,, have you noticed lately that EPG has mentioned brown liquor ??
    Until he came down here to go ice fishing he had been drinking what I call parts cleaner, or as he calls it, tahkeela or hose A or something like that.
    Anyway, once he was down here we broke him of that silly school girl cheerleader koolaide.

    Something I’ve started always doing if I have an extra hole is throwing them on a stringer. You can get quite a few fish on them, the chain ones work pretty slick. One tip I would give is to find some sort of cheap weight that weighs just a few pounds to pull the stringer down. Sometimes you’ll have too many fish, or for whatever reason they won’t go down the hole easy. I’ve kept walleyes and pout alive on them for multiple days. That way you don’t have to deal with filleting a frozen fish, and they’re generally alive so you can bleed them right before you head off the ice.
