Fish of the St. Croix: Past, Present and Future
Public · Hosted by St. Croix River Association and River Falls Public Library

    THIS Thursday, April 12th 6 PM – 8 PM

    River Falls Public Library

    Free Tickets Available HERE

Habitat and weather changes, and introductions of non-native fishes have shifted the fish communities of the watershed. The St. Croix fish have proven remarkably resilient. Our fish population remains one of the most diverse in the Upper Midwest. But change is coming and the St. Croix watershed will likely look very different in 50 years.

Join Dr. John Lyons, the Curator of Fishes at the University of Wisconsin Zoological Museum in Madison, to learn about how climate and other changes are affecting the fish in our watershed.

I would like to attend this but that date doesn’t work for me. Any chance someone will be recording this and putting it up on the net?

I am interested but it would seem you need Facebook access to get the free tickets. If that is the case than I am no go. Let me know if I am missing something

When a lady asked “will jumping off the cliffs at Taylors Falls hurt the fish” I was ready to go. When the lady asked if it’s ok for her 2 year old to play in the water…”will muskies eat my 2 year old?”…I left.

It was just a good reminder to me that some of the things I take for granted others have never experienced.

”will muskies eat my 2 year old?”

First you will have to cover your 2 year old with lots of shiny jewelry that flashes and dangles. Than pick up a good quick strike rig and depending how heavy your 2 year old is you will want something like 100 lb braid on your rod. Toss him out and let him splash around. After he gets bit I would not wait too long before setting the hook so you don’t gut hook the muskie when she swallows your 2 year hole.

By not recording it, you’re not missing much Tuma.

Lots of speculation on the way the river was and what it will be in the future. Some I would agree with and some not so much. However the speaker has a degree and has been working in the field for a very long time.

I didn’t know that muskies are not native to the Croix. They were first stocked in 1920. No one knows why they weren’t there naturally.

All it cost was my time and it was worth that…they had cookies! Just ask Jessie!

BK, The time you spent there what was it like aside from the lady. I wanted to go but being over in Minnetonka for the unseen future and a bad ankle I just could not make it. Boy, I do miss the Valley!!

We posted at the same time Sinker.
Some of the inaccuracies (IMHO) stood out so far that it took away from some of the other points.

    See above.

John Lyons is basically the guy who wrote the book on much of Fish ID.
He was pretty clear that much was speculation. The real part of it for me was listening to him afterwards.
We know many of the same people but I had never spoken with him. HE is always willing to share his knowledge.

This is what I took from the seminar:

Well, that place was a rip-off.

In his very 1st slide he said:

” There are no trout in the Mississippi River…”

he lost a major part of my attention and a huge chunk of the credibility I had gave prior to going.

Then there was some other arguable data he presented that lost all of my attention and the rest of the credibility I had gave him. I was ready to leave 1/2 way through the seminar. I stuck it out but I’m sure I could’ve made much better use of my time by not attending.

    That’s my two cents.
