Frabill 371 inline reels…who uses them?

Was wondering what I am doing wrong with these reels. No matter what I do or what line I have had on them the line still gets behind the spool and I have to take off the spool get the line cleared and then reinstall the spool again. I like the reels except this problem.

Is it just me or am I missing something really simple?

    THX for any help!

Is your reel taped on to your rod? If so, re-mount the reel slightly off-center from the line guides so that the line will spool-up on the side opposite that annoying spool cap when retrieved.

Rods have reel seats so not sure that will work. But THX!

That’s one of the biggest downfalls of the Frabill line of reels along with not having a free-fall. On the GTI or Eagle Claw reels all you have to do is unscrew the spool and away you go.

The 371 does have a free-fall button along with a free-fall adjuster. I started using one this season but haven’t had the line behind the spool issue. I used 10 lb. ice braid and it spooled back up well. Is the line spooled up to one side, making it easier to slide off? I agree that that spool cap can be annoying.

I have one and it’s been okay. I still haven’t found the “sweet spot” in the free-fall adjuster and typically just control spool speed with the pad of one finger. I’ve found that when I do this I never get any kind of backlash or line trying to slip off the spool.

I like the idea of in-line reels on a few light panfish rods. I have a BB 6061 I that’s okay too, no better than the 371 IMO…still “brake” it with my finger.

I have mine spooled up with 3# fluorocarbon. I get that same issue every few times out. I have found that the less line, the better with this reel. I took some off and have been having less issues.

That makes sense. Think I will give it a try. THX

I would agree, less line creates a taller spool lip= less line jumping off.

I have used mine for 2 years now. I have just found I can hold my hand lightly over that side of the spool and slow the spool enough to prevent it. It really happens in the wind much more often. I actually like using the reel now.

On my 371 I have had the same issues. I added a washer to extend the tensioner screw for the free fall that worked for a while. Now I have placed that a small plastic bead will snap into the holes on the side. It doesn’t add friction to the spool in the free fall mode until you apply pressure with a finger. Don’t call Frabill because you find out your the only one having that problem.
