Very cool find! Different than the hoops and wire I’ve seen guys use for trout though.
I remember my first trip ever to the Apostles, it was on the ice (I’ve been there in a boat many times since)
A buddy and I didn’t have much of a clue what we were doing (for locations and technique), but knew enough not to venture out farther than anyone else. We fished by Hermit, but could see guys out by Stockton.
Pretty neat seeing teepees set up on the ice, with guys bobbin for Lakers with beetles.
Totally different way of fishing, for a fish that was alien to me at the time.
We had a flip-over with braid on 1500 size reels and heavy spoons with smelt. It got us down on fish in a modern way (superlines obviously didn’t exist when bobbin was invented.) The guys we saw were using hoops with wire line.
We didn’t put any lakers topside that day, but it was a ton of fun anyway. Graphed a few trout and a million herring (tullibee)
The current around the islands was mind-blowing for a seemingly frozen-still tundra.
The bay and islands can be treacherous and unforgiving, use extreme caution and never go exploring, especially alone.
Rest in peace Mr. Jim Hudson, you will never be forgotten
