    Hello all,
We just got done with a trip out to Fort Peck for some lakers. We had a great time and I would recommend anyone who wants to target lake trout to give jigging in the summer a try. We boated quite a few(I lost count), and kept some to take home for the smoker. If you are looking for a guide I can’t recommend Scott Collinsworth at Fort Peck Marina enough, he is an excellent guide, easy going, and perhaps most important is great with kids.

Nice fish. I’d love to get out there. How were you fishing them ?

We cancelled our trip we had planned for last week out there due to some medical issues. I hope to get out there next year. We also had a guide trip planned with Scott. I was looking forward to fishing with him. He was nothing but great on the phone. That jigging for lake trout sounds fun. Where did you stay while you were there? we were having a hard time location lodging. Several of the bigger campgrounds did not take reservations in advance. They were first come first serve. Did you fish for anything other than the lake trout? I hear the walleye fishing is great and the have good SM bass fishing as well. Glad you had a fun trip.

Looks like a blast. Nice fish. Any secret jig combo you would want to share?

We were jigging for them, in my opinion there is no better way. We only fished for Lakers, but I would love to try Smallies, and Walleyes.

We stayed at Cottonwood Suites in Glasgow, about 20 minutes away from the marina.

Jigging tactics? We had to slow down the presentation, they were timid on the bite most of the time. Some of the bites were more akin to a sunny, but some were freight trains. If you felt like you got hit, set the hook hard! Hook sets are free. I lot of guys are running their walleye gear, although I didn’t like that much I preferred a little heavier rod.

My son and I have been catching a few Lakers trolling in central MN, but would like to try the jigging thing. Care to share what type of jigs you use? Do you target fish at specific depths? We see fish from 40 down to 80 ft, but not sure if we should try for the super deep ones or not.

Any tips for keeping them alive for release in the summer heat?

We were using VMC underpsin 1oz jigs in white w/ Storm largo shad in 4″ White. We found lakers in the mornings active at 80ish feet, it wasn’t a huge bite but consistent. Around noon each day they disappeared all together, we spent a bunch of time looking in the afternoon but didn’t find them again. We knew some guys were looking for them in 55 feet of water. We checked out some structure at 55 feet but couldn’t get anything to bite.

As far as keeping them alive it wasn’t a problem, that said, the weather was cooler for us.

How was your stay at cottonwood suites? Nice Motel? Were you comfortable with your boat in the parking lot?
We usually camp. I like my boat right by the camper. never did the hotel thing because of that. But I’m not really interested in pulling a camper and a boat that distance. Thanks for any info.

They were pretty disorganized, one of our rooms wasn’t ready when we got to it. They upgraded the room to a suite so that was ok. Parking for the boat was tight, you may end up having to park a long ways away from your room if you are pulling a boat, I noticed some were detaching and using two parking spaces. I didn’t have any worries about the security of the boat. The parking lots are well lit.

I think next time I’m going to try Airbnb instead, the pickens are a little slim in those parts but I would rather not have to contend with hunting for parking.

Better start that search for a AIRBNB well in advance. I searched for one starting in Feb. for mid June trip and had no luck. Ever thing we found was booked for the month of June.
