Ford/Lincoln Backup Cam Replacement — Say what???

Mrs. Grouse’s 2011 Lincoln Mkx backup cam went on the fritz about 3 months ago. First it was intermittent, then it just went totally and there’s a pop-up message to see my local Lincoln dealer… Uh oh.

So finally I got around to getting it into the dealer. Got call back. Camera is bad. $1,389 plus tax, plus disposal fee, plus local tax, plus tax on the tax, plus the fee-fee, = almost $1500 out the door.

Part was quoted at $680 plus labor of over $700.

Say f#$%&!g what???? Yeah, that’s going to be a hard no.

    Questions:

    1. Looked up the part on Ford’s parts site, I’m getting a camera part number 19G490. At the Stealership-quoted price of $679, of course. No variations are listed for this Lincoln on Ford’s site, only one camera comes up. So checking that part number online, I find all kinds of them listed for $79 to $129. Most use this part number: BT4Z-19G490-B

Am I missing something here? Are there variations or are these aftermarket cams going to leave functions like parking lines not functional?

    2. $700 to install this new camera. Come on. What’s book on this job? I replaced the wiper motor and lock mech before on SUVs and even accounting for not knowing what I’m doing, they were know more than 2 hour jobs. Is there something about this Mkx that makes this cam replacement really really hard?

    3. Is there anything else this could be? Just putting that out there in case somebody knows of some other known issue with these cams that makes them stop working.

    Thanks for the help.

I think it’s a common issue with Fords. My Wife’s Expedition’s camera is haywire, too, and we got quoted a similar price. So we’ve reverted to the stone age and are turning around and looking! rotflol Everyone should do that anyway but people (myself included) have become too reliant on them. They don’t show anything to the immediate left or right so if someone is walking just off your bumper they don’t show up in the camera until it’s too late.

I do like them for hooking up trailers and backing trailers, but are settling for doing it the old fashioned way for now.

If someone can verify it’s an easy job, I may also be interested in trying myself if I can get the part cheap enough.

We had to replace the camera on my girlfriends 2015 escape. Dealer quoted us $800 but luckily we bought the extended warranty and it covered it. Are there any aftermarket stereo/audio shops around you? I’ve been looking into adding a backup camera and new stereo reciever which the camera shows right on the receiver to my f250 and a place quoted me around $800 installed.

Looks pretty straight forward if 2011 is anywhere close to 2012. Looks like $117 everywhere.
    Good luck

That or Youtube also has a 2011 Ford Edge instructional video which might be similar.

I did look up my 2015 expedition and it looks pretty simple, now you got me thinking!!! )

I replaced the rear camera on a f150 with a camera he bought off amazon, he says it works great, I thought he paid somewhere around $200 for it; took about 30 min on his truck to replace, Check you tube for video’s on replacing yours.

I replaced my camera on a 2014 Dodge Ram, had the dealer do it. Total parts and labor was under $300 if I recall correctly. I was in & out in less than a hour. I think it was plug & play.

My neighbor was told $600 to replace headlight bulb assembly in his wife’s Buick because it called for over 4 hours. Including removing the front bumper. I pulled a small cover and half the fender liner. Did the rest by feel. Took about 20 minutes. She bought the bulb for $127, I could have got it for $80. Just bought the extended warranty on my F150 to 125,000 miles. After almost 50 years. I’m readjusting to having to pay retail.

Come on buddy, think about the IDO way! Buy a 60 inch TV to replace that tiny screen.

Isn’t this more and more how everything is going? Truck tail light piece that holds the bulbs went bad – OEM replacement bulb holder is almost $60. I got the entire tail light assembly (lens, holder, bulbs, screws) from Amazon for $25 – still fine years later. Gas fireplace blower started screaming – almost $200 through the manufacturer. Good as new with an identical $32 Amazon blower.

My mom had to replace a side mirror on a traverse, not exactly sure the year but it was $450. Crazy what stuff cost these days.

Id say 10 years of use out of an electronic accessory on a Ford product is pretty good. Not too many years ago Ford couldnt even make an FM/AM In dash radio that lasted ten years!

Side mirrors on a super duty $1500 a piece, Cadillac Escalade headlights 3k each. That’s new factory parts and no labor.

    Thanks for the replies folks.

Did some more research and it looks like Ford used 3 different cameras in this vintage. The part number they list online is only half the “real” part number so they’re making it tough on anyone trying to fix it themselves.

I believe the cam should have a plug that exits out the back of the camera, but I’m going to have to do exploratory surgery to confirm.

It looks like the more common variation is the version where the plug exiting down at an angle. Of course, this version would be a lot cheaper and more common, but I believe this is not the correct one for the Lincoln.

Matt W, you’re exactly right. After reading some of the online reviews, you can get some aftermarket cams to work, but to get them to work with all functions, you need the right cam.

So time to get in the operating room this weekend and have a look-see. I’ll post an update. Thanks guys.

As a note why can’t I post links to pictures anymore? My post disappears if I put any links in and the image URL button does not work when an image link is pasted in?

is it the camera itself that is bad or the screen on the dash?

Dealership says it’s the camera. For a $179 diagnostic fee, it damn well better be the cam.

Oh, and they tried to tack on a $30 “disposal fee” to my bill. You can’t make this sh!t up. They didn’t fix anything, but yet there’s a disposal fee added.

I pointed to the line on the bill and all I got out of my mouth was, “You’ve GOT to be sh…” Needless to say, that came off the bill.

They don’t call ’em stealerships for nothing.

At first I though I was being censored but I came to realize that this site is blocking your activity if you post too many links or if you post the link in the wrong format. Doesn’t seem to matter one bit if you use the link function. For me, it completely locked my ability to post in the forums but I was fully capable of bugging BK via PM which was nice.

As far as pictures go, if they are too large you can only attach one or two per post.

Quoting is a debacle as well.

This site has gotten really frustrating to use lately. I guess I can understand if security updates causes user issues from time to time but they never seem to get resolved.

I had a 2011 Edge as a DD until the water pump ate the motor at 105k. Mine went out too and it was maybe $75 on eBay? Plugs right in. I imagine it’s the exact same. Bought the chinesium version.

Thanks for the replies again folks.

Notice how the plug exits straight back from the cam. It looks like the more common variation is this version, note the plug exiting down at an angle. Of course this version would be a lot cheaper and more common, but I believe this is not the correct one for the Lincoln.

AmEagle, from what I can find, most Edge models use a different camera, but again Ford seems all over the map on what cam went in what vehicle, it’s like they were using the grab bag system of parts management. And just my luck, the cam I think the Lincoln uses is NOT the cheaper one.

Almost like the brakes on early gmt800 trucks…talk about grab bag…

I can’t remember what it looked like but I don’t think that was it. 2011 is flirting with U-pull territory now. Maybe they have one you can scoop up.

Good luck, I loved that car. Smooth, fast and decent mileage. Didn’t have a single issue until a connecting rod made a skylight.
