My fishing partners 2010 ford F150’s engine blew up on our way home from Mille Lacs last weekend. I know, I know, this is why I drive a chevy.
He is being quoted at $8k for a remanufactured engine including install.
he cant take the hit and just move on as he still owes $14k on the truck so we are trying to figure out if this is a fair quote or what other options we can/should look at?
anyone have a mechanic that may be more reasonable?
where can we find him a used engine?

    any help is appreciated.

Did you call the auto salvage yards like AAA or Viking?

You Pull Our Parts may even have one?

That seems high. A full reman engine is less than 3k with 3 year warranty and install is less than 2k. Shop around. I can’t see your location on my phone, message me a location and i may have a suggestion on where to go.

That seems really high, was that quote from a dealership? I use Murgic’s out of Rosemount, if you’re anywhere near there. Extremely competent and fair guy with very good pricing. My dad’s the kind of guy who just nods along and pays for what the mechanic tells him the car needs. I know Murgic’s has saved him probably thousands at least over the years, when he could have just gone along with it and my dad would’ve paid up.

I wouldn’t go used unless someone reputable can go through the engine. My guess the engine failed because the timing chain jumped or broken cam phaser sprocket?

Shop around, and you will get a better warranty with a quality reman.

Years ago I had a Jasper rebuilt installed. It was a great motor for me. Just understand when buying a re-manufactured you don’t generally get ALL the parts. I think they used my old starter, fuel pump stuff like that. On todays modern motors I don’t know what all would be included.

I can say that 8k is not out of line as I just had to replace my 2004 5.4 engine. It cost me 8500 at a ford dealership for a re-man with a 3 yr. warranty unlimited miles. Some will say I’m crazy for stickin that much into a 2004 with 100k miles on it but the truck is still in excellent condition. it’s got the heavy duty tow package and other goodies that I forked over 36k for back in 2004. That truck new now is over 54k and you can’t get the 5.4 in them anymore. I haven’t had a truck payment for 10 yrs. now so I was expecting to stick money into it. I figure that is still less than 2k a yr. to drive a nice truck. Try doing that now with the new truck prices that are out. doah

You should be able to get a reman engine for $3250.00 or less pending which engine your partner has.

The cab design on those trucks doesn’t make it any easier. If you own a 5.4 from 2004 to 2010 I would recommend trading it in soon. It’s on the worst motor ever made list with the ford diesel trucks 6.0 and 6.4 of that era.

Every motor is different. My 6.0 has 370,000+ miles on it.
