Shad are taking cover in deep water for the least fluctuating water temps. Gulls and everything else has taken notice.

    Quite the smorgasbord happening.

At times bait so thick I can’t read the bottom through them.

Roughly 1/4 mile long and 200yds wide bait concentration…

Are you finding any Shad high enough in the water column to throw a cast net at?

Are you having any luck pulling cranks through these schools?

The ne side of 94 bridge across from beanies they were all over last Friday. Shallower bay, boiling the surface, looked like they were eating crap falling off the trees and bushes from the shoreline when it got to deeper water.

I don’t use small shad, so I didn’t try. Mainly scouting for big sturgeon which I found none in that area, smaller bottom feeders were present though.

You’ll have very limited success trying to net shad that deep. (10-15′) Your net only gets smaller from the instant it hits the water. But no harm in trying if that is what you want to do. There will be some shallower in the water column too of course.

I haven’t been out since last Wednesday, most of the shad I was marking were in the 10 to 15 foot range. I did find a few schools close to the surface.

With the drop in temp I’d expect the deep break South of 94 to be sporting good walleye and white bass action.

Not a single boat as far as the eye could see that night, so shut your mouth devil

There are no walleye or whitebass to speak of in that river! Great images off the birds Sir!

When the schools of baitfish are thick on P4, I love the smorgasbord approach of pulling cranks through them. A few weeks ago we pulled about 20 smallies doing this. An 18-19″ smallie smacking a shad rap on a 4′ shorty rod is a sight to see. It made 8-10# northern on shallow cranks seem like child’s play.
