My son built a summer rod at school as part of a class. He picked out a 7ft med Mod and when he brought it home it only had 4 guides on it including the tip. When I asked about it he had some excuse but I think he just struggled to get it completed in time. My questions are can a rod builder add more guides to it? Will it be ok to use or will the lack of guides put uneven stress on it and cause it to break?

Ooof, that rod should have 8 guides, 9 including tip top. Maybe you could fill in the gaps with more guides depending on what size guides are on it and what the spacing is, but it definitely won’t be perfect. That would be the cheapest/easiest fix though. Best option would be to remove the 3 guides and start from scratch. I highly doubt it’s ok to use as is.

That’s what I was thinking. The class has ended but we will see if there is a way he can fix it at school or it may become a decoration.

Where you located? its easy to cut off some of the guides and install new ones at the proper placement.

We live by rice mn. We are first going to see if he can fix it at school otherwise look into other options. My son has ADHD and if something becomes hard or he falls behind the others in class he just does the bare minimum to get by and get it done even if it isn’t right. We emailed the teacher and he said he told him it wasn’t right but my son just wanted to be finished with it. I would just like him to be able to use the rod but it’s need to be done right first.

The rod is epoxied and done just not with the correct amount of guides

My son is the same way and it can be tough. You will have to add more guides to it. You can use a shoe box with a small V cut into each end as a jig. It is fixable but not usable the way it is.
