For all you Bird Nerds, like me!

I know there’s a lot of folks on here that pay attention to the seasonal movement of birds and enjoy watching the feeder, etc. I discovered a really cool app called “Merlin” which was created by the Cornell University Ornathology Lab. You can basically step outside, hit record on the app and it will listen and identify each bird in the area by its call. It begins to compile a list of each species it’s hearing and highlights that species on the every time it hears it’s call. I’ve been playing with it all summer. In my yard it definitely confirms all the birds I know are around (various sparrows, cardinals, robins, grackles, etc) but also identifies some finches and other things that aren’t as frequent, but hit the feeder from time to time. But take it in the woods and it really lights up. I look forward messing around with it in the deer woods this fall.

It’s free and completely legit, I do think Cornell probably mines the data on what birds the app hears and when for research purposes. They ask for an email and I’ve received a handful of messages from the lab over the summer but not a lot, and no SPAM or solicitation. More newsletter-type stuff.

I’ve been meaning to post about it for a while and keep forgetting. Noticed that Meateater is talking about it on their podcast this week and that jogged my memory. Haven’t listened yet, but looking forward to hearing more about it. Check it out wherever you get your apps! Happy Birding!

That is pretty sweet! Thanks for sharing. I think I heard about a website that tracks bird migrations from this website a few years ago. It was fun when I looked it up this Spring and saw the first hummingbirds had made their way to MN. Sure enough, within a day or two I saw my first one.

I love the Merlin bird app! Very easy to use and I love the “sound ID” feature you mentioned where it listens to the birds around you and tells who who’s singing and chattering! So amazing to have technology like this right at our fingertips. I was hearing a bird at my friend’s house and I wasn’t positive what it was, so I pulled up the app to have a listen – yep, it’s a Red-bellied Woodpecker! I couldn’t see him in the trees though, but we know he was nearby! waytogo

I will have to try it. The app name caught my attention because Merlin’s are rare to see but we have had them at our cabin many times. They seem to come in late summer. About the time the Rails migrate to our lake which just happened last week. hmmmmmmmm

Do you ever practice your bird calling to see if it identifies…? “That was a dodo, trying to call like a bird” !!! jester jester jester

I listen to John Latimer’s phenology reports on KAXE radio to hear the latest migrations. I really enjoy when he has elementary school kids give their reports too.

I love the Merlin app. Especially in the spring. Grab a beer, get hooked up to the Bluetooth speaker and enjoy playing with the birds by calling them.
