foot controlled trolling motor

Thanks for the add today. Here’s my problem. My brother recently bought a Caravelle 16′ tri hull from the mid 1970’s, that is set up as a bass boat. Our problem is “bubba” got to this rig in a big way. Mercury outboard is painted flat black with red Mercury labels on it. We think it is a 65hp from what research I have done. thats seems to run ok. BUT! the front mount foot controlled trolling motor got the same treatment. The only label we can find is on top of the motor and it says 28 pound thrust. The motor was originally white. No other ID is visible. Need help determining what this is. Brand, year etc. also the steering is with 2 cables that are clamped to a chain and 2 sprockets inside the top box. It does not steer well. Randomly out of sync, or will turn right not left or reverse. We lubed the cables inside with PB Blaster to help them loosen up. They appear to have been rerouted in the foot control. So I need all this general help. If I can find out what it is, I can probably research the diagrams to route cables properly. Thanks for the help. If you need more info, I will try.

If you post a photo of the trolling motor someone should be able to recognize the brand by its shape. If it’s a Minn Kota from that era, there’s a reason that all the BASS Minn Kota pros ran hand control motors on their bass boats… I had a foot control Minn Kota from back then and vowed I’d never own another Minn Kota.

It’ll be easier to get a new or used trolling motor.A 28 pounder won’t pull much in a slight breeze. If it’s white probably an old motor guide.

I will get some pictures tomorrow. It seems to move the boat ok but haven’t been out in much wind.

The head looks like it’s probably a Minn Kota to me. They used to have a white cap on the top and black on the bottom half – maybe scratch the bottom to see if it’s black under the paint that was added. Motorguides back then used to be all white top and bottom, but both companies have had all white and all black motors, and this may be a unit that was added later or replaced the original.

28 lbs. was the top motor back in the early 80’s and will move the boat ok – especially if you’re using it for bass fishing in lakes instead of trolling or fishing in current all day. Parts could be hard to find so you may have to fabricate something to support the steering cable on the side that binds.

    Good luck.

ok. I’m good at fabbing things up. I’ll start looking for early 80’s minn kota info. some diagrams would be helpful
