Food Plotting – Better Late than Never

I spent most of this last weekend trying to sneak in a food plot at my small piece of land down along the Minnesota River near Mankato. I would have liked to get it in sooner but mother nature had different plans, most of the access road has been underwater for the last month! It finally dried out and I was able to get back there. In a couple days I mowed the chest high grass, sprayed and tilled the 1.5 acre plot. I spent the better part of Sunday night power washing the tractor, it was a muddy mess! If I don’t have to do that again soon, I’ll be fine with it.

My plan is to get out before the Thursday/Friday rains to plant!

Here are a few more pictures, one before we started, quite thick to say the least

Great looking seed bed. What are you planting in there?

The “later” part may not have hurt you this season. With as dry as it was going back to the beginning of August, getting enough moisture for stuff to germinate has been touch and go depending on how lucky you were with showers.

Now at least the rains have been semi-regular over the last 2 weeks. Hopefully that continues.

I’d also be interested to hear what you planted.

Roto-tiller? No fair! Definitely the way to go if you have one handy. Can’t wait to see the “all-grown-up” pics.

Yeah, he’s showin’ off all the toys on this one. Nice little tractor, nice tiller, great setup.

Roto-tiller! You can add that to the list of equipment I can’t use on my ground. I wish! Way too much rock on my piece. Power rock picker? Yes! Roto-tiller? Not gonna happen anytime soon.

I’ve never planted on this particular piece so I am going to section it off and do a little variety. My plan is to do a late season Brassica/Rape blend on about 2/3 of it and then the other 1/3 a mixed clover patch.

I would get an A for effort wrangling all of this equipment together. It was all but handy. I drove out to New London-Spicer to pick up the tractor on Friday, borrowed the mower and tiller from the “in-laws”, a bobcat trailer from somebody else, worked all day Saturday and Sunday and then dropped the tractor off last night. Got to bed at 1:30am.

You are young, that’s nothing. I used to be able to do that and party…

Seed bed looks great. I hope it pays dividends this fall!
