Food and Drink on Ice

Fellas! Wondering what some of everybody’s favs are when it comes to hard water snacks and sips! For example if I’m runnin and gunnin, I’m all for almonds and peanuts…(no salted) for the protein and lasting fiber…especially when I’m walking out. Then I try not to drink so I don’t have to urine.

However, if I’m out with the buddies, there’s almost always a sniff of whiskey involved…because Jameson is like a sweater you wear on the inside! Irish coffee is always good too. Then there’s usually meat and cheese involved somehow. For a hearty stick-to-your-ribs goodness…steel cut oatmeal with brat chunks, cabbage, onions, and mustard. It’s a veritable “liquid brat” AND holds heat well! Packs a big punch for its volume! Fits in a thermal bag well too.

I usually bring minimal rations on the ice with me.
A bottle of water, some easy to carry snacks, that’s about it.
Sometimes I bring beer if I’m with friends but I take it pretty easy because I don’t want to drive home impaired.
Same holds true in the boat in Summer. I like to actively fish, move around a lot, and to do this I need to keep my mind sharp. Drinking does just the opposite for me, so I wait until I’m comfy at home before doing much of that.
I do enjoy when a bunch of us go out for the day and make a party of it, grilling food on the ice and relaxing, but most of the time I’m a bit more seriously fishing focused so I don’t have time to eat or drink.

Its very rare that I stay put in one area. IF I am lucky enough to get outr with a few friends and chase flags, I bring the smoker and start smoking brats by about 6am or so. Ready for chow around noon. If I know Z-man is on the ice….I follow his grill

My favorite thing to take on the ice for lunch is a loaf of Stromboli. My wife will make me a few loafs and wrap them in aluminum foil then freeze them. I just grab one normaly the night before so it’s thowed out, then when I’m thinking about eating I will stick it under the plastic of my wheeler as I’m moving to another spot. The heat from the exhaust/engine warms it up and I have a nice warm meal!

Since I got back into ice fishing this year I have usually been taking trips no longer than 4 hours. No need for food or drink. I brought a candy bar with me a few times, but never ate it. I am out there to catch fish, not snack.

Water and I like hot sticks and cheese sticks. last year when we stayed overnight My fishing partner pre-made some breakfast burritos that we warmed up on his sunflower heater… after sleeping on the ice those suckers tasted amazing. I quit drinking while fishing… like most things, my game goes south after a certain amount.

Very rarely di I drink on the ice anymore. I got a pretty stern warning by the dnr officer that I could be charged with dui on the quad. So couple that with having to drive home its just not worth it. But I always have various deer sticks, jerkey, and summer sausage, along with a couple bottles of water and a couple sodas in the sled.

I usually pack a sandwich and some chips along with water for a day trip. I also usually bring a few cans of beer. If I’m staying somewhere for the weekend I’ll bring the camp stove and and cook up all kinds of food, burgers, brats, teriyaki chicken, and my favorite white chicken chili. I also will have the sipping whiskey with me on those trips

By my lonesome, I usually don’t remember to eat. Last weekend however, a buddy and I had a “kid’s day” at his place on the ice. Translation: A ton of tip-ups for the kids to chase…in the meantime, we built a fire and roasted brats and later s’mores and ate it all out on the ice. Hot food on the ice tastes awesome! My 6-yr old 37lb sprite of a daughter ate two full brats herself, then downed 3 s’mores. We don’t need to discuss how much her Daddy ate. shock
Fishing was slow…so slow we completed a 5′ high snow fort, but we all had so much fun nobody really noticed. waytogo

Used to never eat fishing, as mentioned before too concentrated on fishing. Let’s remember our brain operates optimally with nutrition.

Someone told me of their snack elk hunting was a large flour tortilla, bacon bits, peanut butter and honey. I personally fry up real bacon and crumble that(typically I like Bacon “medium” with a lil chew, but well well done works best for this). Got your carbs, protein, sugar, and keeps forever in the boat, or ice, and is easy and no mess.

I am really selective. I don’t drink beer when I ice fish unless I am either alone or with someone.

I had hot ravioli this weekend cooked over the buddy heater, nothing like warm food on the ice! Ham & Cheese wraps in foil heated over the buddy heater is my favorite, no mess, just goodness!

Probably because I am still young and dumb, but I never pack a lunch. I always think that I need to spend every second I have on the ice actively fishing. Normally some water on the ice and then a stop at the gas station for some snacks on the way up or way home.

Where I fish I hike a good 2-3 miles and often dragging all my stuff through heavy snow…protein and water is a must if I don’t want to get tuckered out while moving several times in an outing. If I’m with friends we’ll have a beer or two, nothing too crazy – never really tried hot food though – sounds awesome!

I have a super light fold up grill, grab a small bag of light the bag charcoal, we usually have brats of all sorts, warm the buns up over the brats, nothing warms the soul better. The night before you can boil the brats in beer and red chili flakes and onions, let cool and pour the whole thing into a zipper bag and let marinate over night, then can heat up in front of the buddy heater. We have done the zipper bag omelet in boiling water, smoked duck breast on garlic toast is the most requested. We see it as a fun get together which happens to involve fishing.

I hace found that buying a pizza the day before and packing it in ziplocks in the cooler makes for a very quick and easy lunch.

When we are running and gunning up here it is some type of jerky, beef or venison sticks, a few beer and some water. Come March and we are tip up fishing big pike on the flats out comes deep fryer stove and bbq. We make deep fried wings and turkey’s, bbq’d steak, brats, sausage, pork loin, pretty much anything you are making at home in the backyard in summer is done out on the ice. And there is a few more beverages involved toast

But I always have a full liter of “My favorite coffee Joe” with a bit of deer sausage and some cheese. I really don’t “drink” on the water, soft or hard. peace
