Follow the contour boat won’t stay straight

I have a helix 7 G3N with the Lakemaster chip linked to a terrova 80 both brand new and he follow the contour function works but it follows the contours too precisely and when there is sharp turns on the contour the boat will swing around trying to follow the contour exactly which tangles lines and is a mess for trolling, any help on this would be much appreciated thanks!

I think it is doing what it was designed to do. I create my own routes to combat this.

You can also set an offset from the contour. That will help you a little bit it’s working the way it should.

Best to record a track and follow it like the guys said.

#1 reason I went without ipilot link. I prefer Lowrance units anyway and didn’t see a good use for ipilot link that’s proven to work well.

Yep, I got rid of my hbird and went to garmin. Love the new Terrova but it’s way better without link.

Put a little more effort in to fishing and you follow your contour maybe?
Otherwise if the contour jogs real hard what else would you expect then for it to follow. I guess I dont understand the point of that. A false sense of security for catching fish.

When “following the contour” are you in a reasonable distance to the shoreline. I am assuming that the shoreline doesn’t make sharp transitions like the contour you are following.

Try following the shoreline (the zero contour) with a large offset that will get you close to the line you would like to follow.

This will not keep you at the edge of a weedline but it will help smooth the route.

You might also want to try running the “follow the contour” with the “track” on without fishing at 3 or 4 mph. Then use the track to create a series of “waypoints” to program your own “route” to travel at your desired speed.

The “route” will travel from “waypoint” to “waypoint” smothing out any sharp transitions.
You have a great tool, use your imagination. You will be surprised what it can do.

How does one go about setting the offset? I’ve got an old 1198, so I may be SOL?

You might be SOL….I could set it on my helix but not sure on the older models.

The 1198 does the offset too, I used to have one.

Follow the contour works best for slower and more vertical presentations, like jigging, Lindy’s and bottom bouncers.

It doesn’t work for long lines and leadcore unless you’re following a contour without sharp turns.

I agree with B-man, I had an 1198csi and a 998csi and both would do it.
Bottom bouncers on a large reservoir is where it shines for me! I will also use it while pulling plug’s when I’m in a controlled lake structure.

Follow the contour is alright for casting but I usually just use the advanced autopilot + cruise control and that will take you through that contour in a straight line and adjust for wind and current to keep you in that line..

Follow the contour seems to work fine on both of my I-link (2013 and a 2018) but it is really about having the right expectation this is not smart function, it simply follows the line you tell it to follow. If that line turns to much for you, look to adjacent contours, make you own course, or use autopilot. It is also not reasonable to use when the wind really picks up because more speed is needed and as said above autopilot may be a better option. all of my legacy units can do the offset. I would advise reading the manual or watching some videos on how to use the I-link system.
