Foiled baits, end result

I tried my hand at foiling some small crankbaits yesterday and today I painted them up. Pretty nifty stuff that foil. And the process is fairly simple. Cut the foil into strips as long as needed to cover the work area. Brush on the glue and air dry with a hairdryer, then press the foil strip firmly and evenly onto the glue surface. Pell of the plastic cover and there you have it…a foiled bait that looks plated.

I love purple/gold color patterns as much as I do the purple/chartreuse ones and these shown did not disappoint. The other small crankbaits are done in my other favorite crank color of a chartreuse belly with the orange throat patch and a black back feathered onto the sides lightly and finished with a blue to purple color shift clear top coat.

Its super interesting how the foil under the paint works at the surface…what one sees. I love it.

The Flutter Spoon is gold foiled and looks gold plated.

I’m going to do a couple gold foil with orange….sort of along the lines of the old tried and true Rapala orange/gold. We have the trout lake here in town and gold/orange is a knock punch for all of the trouts so I should have a couple anyway in case I sneak over there while the water is still fairly cold.

Those are different. Seen similar baits done this way. Well above my pay grade as I like to keep it simple.

They’re actually pretty simple. Aluminum foil followed by hand brushing a single color. Add the eyes, clear coat, and you’re done.
