Fluoro

Are you a full spool or leader guy when it comes to fluoro? I’m usually a simple leader guy. Most of the time I tie direct braid to my lures unless the clarity is greater than 7 feet.

Filled 2 spools last year and it had more stretch than I had hoped. I was using Seaguar Invizx 20lb and 12lb. The memory was poor as well. I’ve been using braid for years and am very happy with the cast-ability, durability, and strength.

What do you use and for which presentation?

For bass the only 2 rods I use braid or Superline for is Jigs to heavy cover and Frog fishing. Most everything else is Fluro. I don’t use the fluro on any spinning reels, only baitcasters. On the spinning reels I still use Mono.

Braid with leader For jigs and Texas rigs. Tried straight Red Label fluorocarbon for jigs and didn’t like it. Spinnerbait, crankbaits I use 10-12 copolymer.

I really only use fluorocarbon as a leader on braid. Every year I convince myself to spool up one rod with fluoro as a main line (for drop-shotting, light finesse) and every year it ends up in a rats nest within a couple hours. I had one spool of Sniper fluorocarbon left over from the stretch test I posted recently …so….I will try again, fool that I am.

I’ll most likely go back to either a braid/fluoro combo, or just a main line with Yo-zuri Hybrid. Outside of sink rate (which I don’t always need) I find YH far superior to fluorocarbon as a main line for bass fishing. Tougher, less stretch, just as low viz, better knots .. and rarely ever a rats nest..

I use high test Fluorocarbon leaders ~ 16″ tied directly to my main line using an Alberto knot. The main line is braid (say 20 pound) which has low stretch and lower diameter and cast great. This combo works great for toothy critter’s but has caught many nice bass and walleye as well.
Seagers makes great fluorocarbon for leaders.

What pound test leader do you like for 30 pound braid? Does a 10-12 pound fluoro knot go through the guides well?

I use a Saint Croix Premier Heavy Rod (1/2 to 1.5)oz and the Fluorocarbon leader is 60 pound test and the braid is 20 pound test. The Alberto knot is small and does go through the guides without getting hung up.
So with 30 pound braid and 12 pound fluorocarbon the knot would be even smaller and should pass thru the guides easily.

I guess I like braid more…so flouro can only be a leader.
