Didn’t early summer start kinda wet last year? Not sure that April weather tells us much about July.

The entire state was in at least moderate drought in 2021, and heading into spring last year it was mostly gone. So yes, it was a wet spring last year. But then the faucet shut off in the southern half of the state by June again, and we went right back into a severe drought through the rest of the season.

June and July are typically the two “wettest” months of the entire year, but the last two years they have been extremely dry.

    Updated today.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has closed eight of its Mississippi River locks in Minnesota and Wisconsin, saying river levels are unsafe for any navigation for the time being.

The temporary closures block barge and other river traffic south of the Twin Cities. The closed locks are:

Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam in Minneapolis

Lock and Dam 1 in Minneapolis

Lock and Dam 3 in Welch, Minn., near Prairie Island and Red Wing

Lock and Dam 4 in Alma, Wis.

Lock and Dam 5 in Minnesota City, Minn.

Lock and Dam 5A in Fountain City, Wis.

Lock and Dam 6 in Trempealeau, Wis.

Lock and Dam 8 in Genoa, Wis.

The Corps said another lock, at Guttenberg, Iowa, could close Tuesday.

Pool 4 is around 120,000 cfs. Personally I’ve never been on the river faster then someplace around 80,000 cfs and that was cooking!

It takes a different mind set. I slammed the aft end of my Lund into a dock because I was use to making a turn in a much slower river. Then there’s those blasted trees under water.

A kayak in the back waters would be cool right about now.
