Looking to get a flip over shelter. Unfortunately at this time i only own a 2013 ford fusion so size will be a issue at this time. Im looking at a frabill aegis 2110 has the dimensions folded will fit in the trunk with back seat down, but i have herd bad things about them. I have also been looking at a 2 man eskimo Sierra, but it a little tall but if i removed the seats would fit better?

Another option im throwing around is putting a hitch on the car and buying a small trailer to use but if i do that that extra money i could use to lower the amount i owe on the car and sooner to get a truck.

What about a hitch hauler instead of messing with a trailer?

You obviously wouldn’t want to overload it, but it should haul a portable just fine.

You’d also want a cover or tarp while traveling so it doesn’t get covered in salt/slush.

    Have to be a flipover?

The pop up shelters have really come a long ways and would be ideal for a car.

I did the car thing in college with an ice shack. Even though the dimensions look like they may fit, the clearance and angle of getting the shack into the trunk opening is what causes issues. I’d be shocked if that flip over shack truly fits in the trunk due to this. I ended up bungee strapping my trunk closed on a 2006 Grand Prix and the shack still hung out by a foot or so. This car was probably similar in size to yours, or maybe even bigger.

I purchased only trucks after college, but would highly recommend looking into a hub style shack. As said above, they’ve gotten a lot better and are affordable for the most part. Another option would be the clam suitcase style shacks that fold extremely flat (probably 10″ or so). They are a little harder to find, but are ideal if you are looking for something to fit in a car trunk that can still fish two people and have a floor.

I agree with others on the Hub style – Unless you want to be real Mobil. They are a little tough to be moving from spot to spot unless you have help and want to stake it down at each new location

Another vote for a Hub, and add a jet sled. Unless it’s brutal outside just don’t set your shanty up until you’re on fish, or know they’ll show up at some point. Itll pull easier too.

Skip buying a trailer and buy a roof rack for your car if needed. I too would vote for getting a hub house and a jet sled.

I have a 3/4 ton truck, a snowmobile trailer, a 1 and and 2 man flip shack. I also have a hub style shack and a jet sled. The jet sled and hub gets the most use. Go that route. You will be happy. There is a lot of other gear you can fit in the car with a hub shack

I agree with the others that the hub house is going to work best. If you are set on a flip over check out the Ice Runner Escape fish house. It is a flip over with a VERY shallow sled. I am not a fan of the shallow sled, but it might make it easier to fit in a car.

I’ve hauled a Frabill Sentinel in the trunk of my winter beater (Mitsubishi, Lancer) by in my trunk I mean 3/4 of it hanging out with straps holding it in. I thought it would fit but when I flipped the seat down it only had a tiny opening behind the seat. I would do a hub shelter and the smallest tub you can find to haul your gear.

I’d get the largest otter x over and put wheels under sled and tow it.

Depending on how your rear seats fold down the Clam Nanook is a great option. Its a small 2 man but it’s perfect for 1 man and two poles. I had a two door civic when I owned that and it fit perfectly. The sled is not too tall either so it should fit into most sedans with the back seats down I would think. I’d check it out and see if it fits in your car.

I’ve been doing the same thing for a couple years – I bought an older used Clam 1 man and been hauling it in the trunk of my car. No way you can fit a 2 man in the back seat or trunk and that extra weight sucks out on the ice. One way you can save space in your car and weight on the ice is by removing the seat and sitting on a bucket inside the shack. If you’ve never owned a shack, then you’ll be so happy to have one you could care less about what you’re sitting on inside the shack. There is a newer style shack called the Jason Mitchell Blazer which is really lightweight with no seat. You just sit on a bucket. Should fit in a car and really affordable too as far as flip-overs go.
