Flasher Noise

I have a Vexilar FL-20. I’ve started to notice a lot of noise that shows up if a fish charges my jig, especially so if I miss the hookset. Let’s say I’m fishing in 15 ft of water with my jig at 11 ft or so. If a mark appears and screams up at the jig, the dial will be full of color from the bottom up to about 8 ft. If I hook the fish the graph will settle down by the time I drop down the hole again. But if I miss the fish it’s a shot in the dark to pick out my fish and the jig in order to catch it. Is this a normal occurrence that I have to live with or is there something I can change to combat this? In all other situations this flasher works flawlessly and I’m glad to have gotten it for Christmas!

Don’t mean to sound like an IT help guy but is the gain all the way down?

I was going to mention it. Happens to me a lot when I am running my gain higher, just turn it down a little bit right after you set the hook and all the little green lines go away!

I’ve moved the gain down as low as it can go, even put it into weed mode. The noise is still there. Most of the time when I’m fishing I don’t have the gain much above the base level. I’m starting to wonder if the activity from the strike lights it up.

It might be air bubbles coming off your line when you move it aburuptly.

This. Specifically if you put your line down for the first time that day.

And if you’re using live bait, especially waxies, a lot of debris comes off your hook when a fish bites it. It means your flasher is working properly and is really sensitive. Like it should be.

If you have the gain at min I would suspect their is an actual problem with the unit. Have you used it on different bodies of water?
