FlameKing 1lb Refillable Tanks – Do they exist anymore?

Yeah that’s the point, I can’t imagine any officer asking if your 1 lb propane canisters have been refilled. And even if they asked, how could they tell? To be clear I think the flame-kings are the obvious way to go for safety, it just seems so silly when someone brings up the disposables can’t legally be refilled and transported.

Disagree that it’s silly to bring it up if it dissuades people from willfully breaking a law that contributes to an accident.

No offense meant to anyone doing it. To be fair, it is common and seems innocuous enough until something happens. Just won’t be asking you to bring the propane if I’m driving… toast

The legal aspect is only going to apply if an accident happens. You could be held liable if an accident occurs.

No one is going to cite you for refilling a propane tank.

Wasnt there an explosion recently in Rochester I think because of a guy refilling 1# tanks? A couple years ago maybe.

The legal aspect is only going to apply if an accident happens. Insurance isn’t going to cover an accident if what you were doing was illegal.

And how can they tell if it’s been refilled? I get it if the accident was while refilling that’s obvious, but that’s not what people say is illegal. They say it’s the transporting refilled canisters that’s illegal.

I remember an elderly man dying in a garage fire like 10 years ago, his wife may have died as well or maybe she died and he didn’t. Don’t remember exact details, but tragic either way. Refilling is something to take very serious no matter what canisters are used.

But even with that I’m not sure there’s anything illegal about refilling the green canisters – just transporting. I mean Mr. Heater makes the refill adapter and it’s sold at regular hardware and big box stores.

These types of laws are passed due to pressure from insurance companies. If they have any reason at all that a law was broken contributing to the accident they will deny a claim. You’ll have to go to court to fight for your claim. They need proof like you say but you’ll have to spend your own money to fight.

If a court is trying to determine liability for an accident, this website is really all the proof you need for evidence. Lots of people here have openly admitted to it. It can be used in court if something happens to someone here.

I suppose too that the manufacturers of the single use tanks also have an interest as well. They don’t want the liability of an accident if someone has an accident from refilling them.

I think you are 100% correct tswoboda and Biggill. Transportation is implied regarding my comments.

BTW the FlameKing’s have a shelf life for DOT purposes too. I think 10 years. That is easily checked if you happen to be stopped and the LEO wants to look closer.

The transport part might be the easiest way to ban it without actually banning it.

I went to the flame king tanks because it always seemed if I was refilling the disposable ones there was always a leaker. Now I just wasted 1 tanks worth of propane. And never seemed to get them more than 1/2 full

I bought 3 flame king tanks today on scheels website. Anyone know where you can get the refill kit the cheapest? Doesn’t look like scheels carries it.

Its a ways from you, but the Mimbach Fleet Ace Hardware in Sauk Rapids has several on the shelf for like $65. I just picked one up today. Far cheaper than I could find online.

Be careful with those I have heard some horror stories before. I think someone even here mentioned some pucker moments with them.

Right…I’m a downright nanny. Have my pen and pad ready to write down license plate numbers if I see anyone using disposable propane tanks or shooting off fireworks. roll wave

That’s called being a nark, the comment earlier was being a nanny. But my comments were never meant to you. Just stating, lots of dumb laws.

If you can, just buy the adapter, the refill kit with the stand is useless IMO. This one looks pretty much identical to Flame King. The actual Flame King valve has a plastic tab that will only fit flame king tanks. This one will probably fit both.

I agree BC. That’s what I meant about fireworks.

So people are ordering $100 worth of bottles and then a $65 dollar kit to fill them? Even at $7 a bottle that is 24 disposable ones. I dont think I have gone thru more than 2 a year. At that rate I think I will keep buying the disposable ones

I go through about 6 x 1 pound tanks a year, they are currently about $6 each, so that’s $36. I just purchased 3 Flameking tanks for $60 and a refill adapter for $20 on amazon.com (you can simply flip the 20lb tank upside to refill, don’t need the stand) So my investment is $80

So in 2.5 seasons i’ll break even and don’t have to deal with disposing of 18 empty tanks…i’ll be happy with that…

I use a fully inslutaed flip over, so I don’t use a ton of heat, I like the 1 pounders to save on towing weight and storage…

If you only use 2 a year you obviously dont use it very much. We would go through 3 or 4 a weekend.

Thats makes sense. I guess I only use the 1 pounders for early ice and only run my heater for an hour or so unless its super cold.

Yeah, I dont like lugging around tanks all the time. Plus with the 1 pounders they light a lot faster.

In a week of duck hunting I’ll burn thru about 6 bottles. That’s before the temps drop and the water gets hard.
I just ordered 4 more refillable bottles so I don’t have to refill after every trip.
I use refillable’s in the duck boat and when I walk out on the ice. I’ll larger tanks when pulling with the ATV
