Are these things really that good? I’m guessing yes with the prices of propane lately but I’ve heard they don’t fill up all the way either? Anyone with experience with these have comments on them?

Yes they are worth it and yes they fill up all the way
Just sayin… a guy I know hasn’t had any issues with the standard green ones when refilling… but thats just a guy I know

Tell the guy you know congratulations
I have seen them locally in the twin cities (maenards). I have a question do these refillable ones need to be purged like the big tanks before use?

No matter what tank you use you will need to purge the air out of the lines on you equipment
When you are filling the tank you open the relief valve with a allen wrench and it forces the air out and replaces it with liquid propane. When the propane starts sputtering out you close the valve and release the arm that is filling the tank. Very slick setup. There are others on Amazon that look like they would work as well.
I bought the 5# tank that way I don’t have to refill 1# cylinders in my uninsulated and unheated garage. The tank was a little expensive but it is still light to carry. This worked better for my situation, but I am starting to wonder if I need a second 5# tank.

In essence, the refilling procedure for the refillable 1 lb tanks, purges the tank every time it is refilled. That is assuming one follows the refilling instructions given by Flame King.

I’ve been happy with my 5lb tank. I do bring a 1lber as a backup.
Where are you guys getting 5# tanks? I see them at Costco or hardware stores but hard to stomach that they cost more than 20#s. May just have to suck it up but wondering if you are finding them at a good price somewhere.

Got mine at Menards a couple of years ago. Forgot the price. In time, it sure beats the cost of disposable 1lb bottles. I like that it fits in a 5 gallon bucket too.

I got mine at Tractor Supply several years ago. Unfortunately we’re a niche market for the 5lb tanks. They probably sell 10’s of thousands of 20lb tanks for every 5 or 11lb tank.
This reminds me my 5lb tank needs to be recertified before it’s next fill.
5# tanks are the way to go. I refill mine from a 20#.
I have no interest refilling 20 dollar 1 pounders. But if I can refill a 5 I’d be all about it. Next time I see you on the ice you’ll have to walk me through it.
What I like most about the 1# refillables is knowing I always have full tanks for a trip on the ice. No more bench full of partial tanks either. I also like not having to take a tank and hose. I use a Otter pro lodge flip over and have never used more than 5# of gas in a day. So with 2 full tanks loaded in the big buddy I only need to fit 3 more in my sled to know Ill be warm all day. For the last 3 years I have had 5 refillable tanks I picked up 4 more this week. Its just so convenient and (after the initial investment) cheap to fill my own and head out on each outing with full tanks. My Father has his own LP fill station at home with a 300 gallon tank but even though he only lives 2-3 miles away I still prefer the 1# tanks I can fill at my house myself at my convenience. Having two 20# tanks works good for me. When I empty one 20# tank filling my 1# tanks at home I have plenty of time to take my empty 20# over to fill up. I don’t miss taking my 5# or 20# tank out on the ice. If I were into ice camping I would definitely take the 20# and hose with. Everyone’s situation is different, you just have to find out what works for you. My first 5 tanks I bought 3 years ago cost $12 each but I know they have paid for themselves. The last 4 I just bought cost $17 but them to will pay for themselves over time. My main purpose though was convenience, saving money is just a plus.
I really like the flame king bottles. My boat grill burns hotter with the flame kings and I get more burn time. I can also empty my 20#er before I exchange it out instead of waiting for it do run out in the middle of a cook or something.
I see Flame King is in the heater business too. Another alternative to Buddy.
