The annual trip is getting close again. Heading up opening weekend of smallmouth which is June 19th. Hoping to catch some walleye also. Should be early enough. Anybody venture out? Best small river in WI IMHO

it originates from the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage which is about 10 miles S of Mercer WI.

Reports of walleye and muskie have been good lately.
Walleye should be good for a couple of more weeks before they head for and hold in deeper holes.
Muskie fishing has been good on suckers and topwater. Bass are starting to heat up. Opener for bass is June 19th. Catch and release until then. But really who keeps SM bass anyways?

    quick repo on Flambeau.
Muskies were active as we boated 2 on 6/19. a 37″ and a whopper that went around 47″. small one came on a Funky Chicken and the big one on a black Buchertail. smallies were still in spawn mode. caught a few but not like normal. Pike were very active with a couple over 30″.

    SteveO,

I am purchasing a home on the Flambeau just upstream from Tee-A-Way golf club in Ladysmith. I am a walleye fisherman who grew up fishing Lake Pepin. I have fished the area around Josie Creek and have caught many fish just not decent sized fish (all around 12 inches and smaller). Does the Flambeau flowage above the REA dam produce any larger walleyes? Is it better above the Thornapple Dam? Where would you send a guy to catch some decent eyes? Have you fished the stretch of river below the REA dam through the town of Ladysmith? Any info would be great here. Smallmouth would be a good fish of choice as well. Muskie are not my bag right now as I have no equipment or experience. By the sounds of the rivers and the area up there, I think that will be my next challenge though.

Thanks in advance for any info. YOu sound like you have much experience and knowledge about that area. I look forward to hearing from you.

floated from Deadman’s to Oxbo on 7/29. took about 4 hours with the swirling winds. Only one 13″ smallmouth just below the Oxbo canoe campsite on a black rapala. Rained pretty good the night before (and again on 7/30). Talked to people along the way, kind of slow in general. Alot of weed due to the low water but this stretch is much better than anything further south.
