One of my cherry trees is officially dead.
Its small size with some decent wood. If any of my IDO Bro’s would like it or some of it for smoking let me know and I will start taking it down with a hand saw instead of a chain saw.

I would love to have taken it all, but that would be costly for me here from DSM, IA

I PM’d everybody local above this post that wanted some of this wood. One person picked some up last night but there is plenty left. Just have to set up apt with me for pickup.

Just another plug for how good cherry wood is for smoking. I’ve pretty much abandoned using the “bagged” forms from the store. The local black cherry has a sweetness with enough strong smoke flavor that I like….all without being too strong. Really one of the few woods you can “do-it-all” with. From fish and fowl, all the way to pork shoulders and brisket, I consistently prefer Cherry over most. The best part is that it grows all over.

    Get it while you can!

That’s funny Joel! Three weeks and only a couple people have taken me up on the offer. One more scheduled for tonight then its gone. Smells like cinnamon when you cut it. I’m keeping a little but I never smoke so I’m looking forward to hearing back from the guys that are trying it.

Denny you ever get to Cedar Rapids, I’ve got some apple wood from trimming my trees this spring, you can have it if you want it, about a bushel and a half load.

Cherry and Apple are my two favorites to smoke with. Wish I was closer to either or both of you.

Suzuki, cut the sticks up on your chop saw and hang the chunks in an onion bag for about a year. If you want to use the wood before it’s dried I’ve been told that green cherry wood bark has some stuff in it that doesn’t go well with meat, so let the green chunks burn the bark off before putting meat on the grill/smoker. I think this is true of just about any green wood.

oh yeah, my fav. woods for game and beef is cherry/pecan, Brisket apple/hickory, pork-apple. If you can get some wild plum it works awesome also. Maybe we should have a wood swap sometime.

Thank you sir. All this talk and a sale at Cabelas has me close to buying a smoker!

Thanks Mossy! I have nothing in the radar now. I had made a trip last June that was the first time in 2 years.

One of my chores for the cabin in September is to find a nice hard maple about 12″ diameter and slice it into 6″ sections. I’ll bring the wood home green and split it into smoke-sized pieces and store in the garage for a year. Hard Maple does wonders on brisket and fish.

Its been a few days since I’ve been in the recipe section, But if you want to come get the apple wood Denny just call my cell or I can ship it to you, I’m guessing maybe $20 bucks for postage, I don’t really know. Cell number is 1-319-573-2371, Just send me back the postage Denny. If there’s any left over I can send it to whoever free for the postage return.
