My shitaki logs are full of buds and I cut a big handful of nice 6″ diameter caps for a stir fry dinner tonight. Man are those mushroom good fresh.

The logs are in their fifth year so I’m starting another round of them yet this month and am going to try oyster mushroom logs as well. The oysters are easier to grow and I can use aspen, birch, or poplar for the logs. Shitakis require oak.

When my first shitakis are in the house I can generally count on finding the first of the yellow morels. The two share very similar temperature needs.

Sounds right……I checked my favorite spot tonight and found some miniature morels too. Wait a day or two and it’s a morel feast!!!

Mine are popping for the first time too. Only have a half-dozen growing but I inoculated last summer. Fun stuff…

Baby yet. They’ll get hand-sized in a couple days. When you see the buds start, be sure to keep the logs damp with a hose if the rain doesn’t cooperate.

Had my first morel meal last night. Words cannot express how much my wife and I enjoyed them.

Got about 50 morels so far this season, but most I’ve let grow. If the spot remains untouched, I will plan on harvesting over 200 this weekend. Just getting started folks!

I let some go two days ago but think I will pick them Thursday since I will be gone until next week and dont want to chance somebody else finding them. With such a short season I get amped up when its time!!!
