I prefer using a Weber Charcoal grill and the Smokenator.

I second the site. It’s awesome. With 3 years of competition under my belt I would suggest the Weber Bullet. $300, portable, a non-babysitter, easy to learn and of enough quality to challenge the big boys if you decide to compete someday.

what do you suggest for a person just getting into smoking. I know I for sure plan on doing salmon and went to the website and just want advice from some of the guys here. I definately want a set and forget type but I don’t want to be limited to fish as I will want to try other meats. I have never smoked anything before so I am as green as it gets. Thanks

I went from a Charcoal smoker to a propane one last year and it is awesome! I was looking at the electric ones but decided on propane and glad I went that route.

wade74 what propane smooker did you go with I am leaning toward a propane style I have heard they produce better flavor. I know I don’t want a charcoal style to much babysitting.

I’m not sure I would agree with this. I don’t know many people on the circuit that put award winning ribs/butts/chicken in a propane smoker.

I have a electric smoker and it works just fine. I only thing that I have not done is a whole turkey. You set your temperate and watch your time line. I am very happy with mine. I have had charcoal and propane,I well stick to electric for me.

Food for thought. If you compete you can only use wood and/or charcoal as gas and electric are not allowed according to KCBS rules. They sanction most large BBQ events in the states. If you think you are not going to compete – all have pros and cons. Check your hardware stores. Here in Rochester the ACE hardware stores have live demos of their grills/smokers and Green Eggs throughout the summer.

I am an Egg head here. I love my Big Green egg. Now I know it is not the most economical upfront however I believe in little time you can save your money in charcoal vs other grill/smokers that are out there.

My egg gives me the ability to smoke at 180 or sear at 800. I find that to be a huge benefit. I have never had as satisfying results as I have had with this unit. I routinely cook a variety of items from banana bread to pizza and it has guaranteed me a spot on most fishing trips for the ribs .

I don’t compete so no issue and I went the propane route. I went with a Smoke Hallow one.
