I went fishing with my son who is 3 in mn. Can I put out a tip ups for him? Not keeping fish but wanting to increase our action. He is helping with bait and pulling in? Fishing mn side of Mississippi. Thanks in advance.

I see you let her borrow your slippers, that was awfully nice of you.

You don’t just get two more lines for yourself. It may seem like semantics, but I have seen COs ask small children to, “show me which rod is yours.”

Have seen a CO do the same so I make sure my 4 year old only gets one line at a time. It’s all I can handle with him anyway, gotta keep the little man busy!
When my 3 year old comes with all of the lines are his
That’s funny right there!

My boy thinks anything less than Daddy uses, “is just for kids” and he wants nothing to with it. Hence he has to use my custom jigging rods. He actually rigged all of the set lines by himself yesterday and then claimed them all
. Ya I was pretty impressed.
He actually caught all of these one morning. Have you ever seen a 3 yr old pull in a rattle reel before? If not it’s hilarious!

What age did you start to bring him with in your wheel shack? My son just turned 2.. thought about bringing him with this year, but decided to wait another year.. the 10″ holes made me too nervous to try it. And the fact that he would get into everything I think. Maybe 3 is the magic age?
January 30, 2017 at 2:28 pm #1669868Yes to the 2 lines for the 3 year old. My daughter is 3.5 and has no problem reeling in fish with her Superman pole. Rattle wheels still need some work(I’ve seen adults make a mess of them too). My 22 month old son is figuring it out. He can reel in a fish with some help and he is a pro at catching minnows. If a CO asked which lines are theirs, he better be ready to write a citation because the kids will say they all are.

I spit coffee on my keyboard when I read this.
What comes around goes around my man.

I’ve asked a co one time about this and he simply “suggested” that the child be old enough to reel in a line themselves. Not sure on how the law is written though.
The above quote is not logical and I would argue all the way to court if he wrote me a citation. When I’m trolling in my boat with multiple people each rod is not required to be assigned to a person. Same for tipup fishing.

I started dock fishing with my son at 2yrs 5mo. All kids are different, but I think it helped we went to a spot with nonstop little panfish action. Went ice fishing a few months later with a camera and he fishes way longer than I expected. As to OP’s question, I can never keep more than one, maybe 2 lines in with him if the fish are biting.
If you’re worried about holes catch cover and other brands make safety covers you can fish through. Small hassle but better than losing a kid – more likely they will save you a cell phone.

Like someone stated earlier. Every kid is different. Mine has an abnormal attention span when it comes to hunting or fishing. He doesn’t listen much until I say we can go fishing, then he’s an angel.
He started begging me to go fishing daily at 18 months. Once he reeled in a limit of walleye be himself he was hooked! At 20 months he was waking me up at 5:00am saying “woweye daddy, woweye daddy?”
His first time ice fishing was in one man flip over. He was 28 months he jigged for an hour by himself. I was actually out drilling a hole when he caught it.
January 30, 2017 at 3:42 pm #1669904I may have started him off in a portable but now he’s 3 and spoiled. Not like I remember it when I was a kid!

My wife and I decided no ice fishing for our son at 2 years old as he could conceivably fit down an 8″ hole, would definitely fit down a 10″ hole and since his sister was a newborn that winter, we didn’t have much free time anyway. Did take him out a few times at 3yo last winter, the extra year helps for being more cautious around open holes and generally getting around on the ice and in/out of the flip over.
Now at 4, I take him out whenever I get a chance. He’s good for about 1.5-2 hours if the action is slow and 3-4 if we’re catching fish, which is plenty for me at this age. We’re going this weekend with my BIL and BIL’s friends to chase flags, should be a good time.

After an hour of pulling one fish after another in he looked at me and said “I am tired of catching bait dad let’s get a muskie.” One day my boy, one day.

Posts: 727January 30, 2017 at 4:28 pm #1669918Thanks for the input boys. Got a new one coming in end of June, so I figure I better make sure that he wants to fishing with me everytime.. or else I have feeling I wont be going anywhere!! haha
January 30, 2017 at 5:05 pm #1669926Pictures of my guy fishing. Always leave right away if he even mentions going home. ALways leave on a high note.
January 30, 2017 at 5:20 pm #1669930Thanks for your responses. I am sure what he does fishing ( helping check bait, pull in fish, and jigging a rod) would get him a ticket if he was an adult with out a license fishing.
January 31, 2017 at 10:03 am #1670103It’s party fishing in MN. The rods don’t need to be assigned but the kid needs to be able to fish. Having a six month old in the house doesn’t mean dad gets two more lines.
I’d say each kid is different, when they can set their own hooks and reel them up they can have their own lines down, aka two more for the party.
I hope COs aren’t too nitpicky about this because the last thing outdoor sports needs is another reason to discourage youth from the sports.
