I have a trip with a buddy booked for mid December Devils Lake through perch patrol and woodland resort. This will be first time really doing an ice trip of any kind had some questions.

    1. has anyone used the guide service of perch patrol before? Do you fish out of portables on guided trips or do you just fish outdoors?

    2. I know last year was down to two years ago but I figured that is because two years ago was an epic year for them I am assuming we should not worry about catching fish is that correct?

    3. Anyone that has been on a trip there with the perch patrol can you tell me what gear you brought if any? I know they basically have new FL-28s and bait etc… I planned on bringing one maybe two rods and jigs and stuff but that was about it for fishing gear what else should I bring. I know it is my first year but want to be prepared like I have been there before.

    Thanks in advance.

Personally I would get in contact with your guide, they should be able to run you through everything and then you can decide what you want to bring of your own.

I will be out there with them on 1/2/16, I believe their website stats that have portables for everyone along with gear/bait but we are planning to bring our own rods. I’ve also hear it was a down year last year, but I’m not going out there expecting to catch a limit, more to learn what to look for on the lake and if we get a 1 man limit between 2 of us, I’m really happy. On 1/3/16, we rented a house thru Woodland as a more relaxed fishing day

Considered Red this year, decided on Clear Lake IA instead.

All of you going URL, where are you staying? Want to do this week after xmas but not sure whats available up there. Hard part is I have no ice transportation other than my trailblazer, which is probably out of the question late December. If I can’t figure that out, then I’d like to try something on the gunflint trail or Ely area. Know some good walleye spots up there that also have rainbows stocked very close by. With inlaws in Duluth I will also be out on the St. Louis around xmas which has been hit or miss for me the last few years.

Lake Erie again for sure. When you hit em right, it’s the most fun you could possibly have on ice. Big perch are fun, but big walleyes schooled up like perch are WAY more fun :waytogo:

Now just pray for good ice out there.

I am also excited to hit up Erie this winter, however it will be my first time there so I am looking for advice on where people stay and what landings are typically the best. Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

We stayed in Port Clinton. It’s a decent sized town with plenty of hotels, watering holes, and places to eat. It’s also close to many different accesses that you’ll be able to bop around different areas on the lake.

We found last year that hotels fill up all over rather quickly once the word of decent ice gets around. Be sure to book in advance of your trip.

Get to the access early. If you’ve ever wanted to see a parking lot with 1000’s of people getting ready to head out, this is the place. That means parking can be limited if you get there late.
