Where is everyone planning on taking trips to this year?

I just got confirmation that I’ll be headed to Upper Red in the beginning of January. For those who are familiar with this body of water, what suggestions do you have for a first timer? Tackle, gear, whatever suggestions you may have are appreciated.

I just booked my group of 6 guys for early January at Zippel Bay on LOTW. We usually go to Ballard’s, but they were booked up. We have found the fishing best earlier in January than later.

I’m sure I will get to Red a couple times early, and LOW a couple times later as I usually do. I have the best luck on Red Lake with a Red (no pun intended waytogo ) Buckshot, and a red hook set line. Best advice I have for Red Lake is to just get away from people. There is little to no structure on the portion of the lake most Minnesotans can fish, so spacing out is greatly to your advantage as the eye’s tend to roam.

If the weather is right this year, I plan on returning to Lake Erie. Going solo most likely… but I’ll have the ATV set up with the Hummingbird for some good mapping, and know it can be a ton of fun after last year.

Would like to find something up near Duluth, maybe still in WI… I’ll be there the first week of January for a day of work related stuff. Sure would like to get a little more out of the trip… and fun sounds like the right “more”.

Check out the Bayfield area. Lots of ice fishing in the area on the big lake in most years.

ZB, The log cabins are awesome – the Owners, not so much.

Annual Adrians trip LOTW. DEC 9th. Fishing Light House Gap, I’ll be trying out the new Otter Resort Hub.

Lake Erie again for sure. When you hit em right, it’s the most fun you could possibly have on ice. Big perch are fun, but big walleyes schooled up like perch are WAY more fun waytogo

Now just pray for good ice out there.

If you booked one of Zipple’s log cabins then you are going to love it. The Igloo out on the lake is a pretty fun place to head for an afternoon lunch or cocktail. Have had bad experiences with the owners and staff. Not the friendliest people!!!

We booked a 6-man sleeper with PortAvilla for the beginning of January. We attempted to book a guide, but apparently they aren’t sure if they have a guide for this year or not…

I stayed in a sleeper house thru Zippel Bay last year and had a great time, the Igloo bar was pretty cool. As far as the owners and staff, maybe we just caught them on the right days but they were very nice and accommodating to us

    Johnson-

Are you booking with anyone on URL? Have you been up there before?

    Watson-

Let me know if you have an opening for another person for the trip, I may be interested depending on what the work schedule looks like.

I’m hoping to get out to the waubay area maybe once a month, depending on ice and snow and everything else, maybe devil’s lake and spirit lake? We will see if I get up to northern mn, or else I spend a lot of time on Minnetonka, can be like a vacation, but I’m only 10 minutes from a shower.

    Francis –

You’ll have to let me know how you do. Are you booking with anyone and renting a house or are you going the mobile route?

Fishing Upper Red 12/29-30th out of Beacon Harbor, and if conditions are good again this year will be on the ice Nov. 27/28th with the wheeler and Otter.
Last year the two days after Thanksgiving were absolutely nuts. Had my 12 year old son with me and for most of the trip we couldnt keep more than 2 lines down, but did have a quadruple and several triples on the first day.

Chuck, if you are up in the Duluth area then you will want to check out St Louis harbor for walleye’s (its a border water and can be fished with WI or MN license). Its mostly an early and late bite, but can be alot of fun. ‘Pout and/or sturgeon are also by-catches.

And I too will be hoping for good ice on the Gitch come Feb/March. The last two years have been alot of fun out there : )

first trip out on Oahe at Mobridge. Second weekend of January. Hopefully! If there’s not enough ice, Devils Lake sounds good! Mille Lacs, Webster area, IGL area, Ending the season in March on Leech/Winnie. We kind of wait till we see how the ice is setting up to determine dates. Can’t wait!
