a very dumb question, but is it possible to pay a resort for a good fishing location and not need guide? has anyone ever thought about doing that, and is it worth it?

No such thing as a ‘dumb’ question! You’ve obviously put some thought into it.

I’ve informally had several discussions at various ‘local establishments’ with the bar keep, front desk staff, etc. and they’ve put me and travel partners on fish with some maps marked up on a napkins!

Local resources are all over..hardware store, bait shop, gas station, etc.

I HAVE found that they’re most willing to help and even get MORE specific on fishing locations at the point of purchase..i.e. booking a room, purchasing a dinner, etc.

“Oh by the way, we’re going to be doing some fishing locally and if a guys wanted to located a few {target species} where would be a good place to start?”

We’ve always gone back to points of information during our stays and graciously let them know our results.

The posts above nailed it. It is amazing what one may tell someone. With that said respect these spots! Don’t urine pound them, practice some catch and release, pick up after yourself and I always try to return the favor whether it be a thank you or bring them some of your catch or game.. This is just how I go about pursuing spots I have been pointed too..

I’ve had resort owners take me out in their boat while I was staying with them.

Worst advice ever received: I was loading up in a Hayward, WI, bait shop one morning and asked, generally, where we might want to target some walleye action. The storekeeps response – “Try Canada”
