fishing partner question

The best fishing partner that I’ve ever had is my wife. We fish together whenever we can and if she can’t go, I usually go alone. I am training in our new dog to come fishing in the boat though. Now, if only I can train him to drive the boat on and off the trailer.

I fish by myself 80% of the time. My wife has no interest and my daughter, now 12 only wants to go when it’s warm out. I enjoy spring, fall and winter so she is out of luck most times. Honestly I prefer fishing by myself because I can go at my own pace, no set times, just go when I’m ready. I have over an hour drive to the river so I never know when I will feel like going.
I do have plenty of buddies that fish but everyone has their own schedule and trying to line up a day is hard enough so it is just easier to go by myself.
Besides when fishing alone, I know who to ask for professional advice!
I more than anything just enjoy scouting new areas as much as fishing. Some guys are balls to the wall fishing and that is just not my style. If I get into em good! If not…..life goes on.

I tournament fish and fun fish. I also don’t have a ton of friends (from my circle of friends) that fish. I chose my tournament partner on the fact that he’s a much better off shore fisherman than I am. I was, up until this year, a garbage off shore angler. He evened the team out. It’s also the only time I usually get to fish with him (he’s a very good friend) because he has 3 kids. Also one of the few people I could probably spend a full 8 hours in the boat with.

I open water fish typically once or twice a week and have a circle of about 4 or 5 people that will come with me. I do go by myself quite a bit though. Probably 75% of the time, however I usually fish weekday mornings which limits my choices on people I can fish wish.

I have never used the Open Seat portion of this forum so I can’t comment on that.

    Love fishing alone
    Love fishing with friends
Wife gets a bit nervous if I fish the river or Mille Lacs by myself so I wish i had more contacts for that stuff.

I enjoy to fish alone as it is my time to decompress and enjoy nature. However most days I will have my lab with me. In the summer when it is nice out my girlfriend will come with to get some sun. As I get older and friends get more involved with their parenting I just find it is easier to get out alone most trips but if they have a free day they may come with if it works out

Idk I find that to be your most redeeming quality wink

Neither I, nor any of my buddies, have a boat so I do a lot of my fishing alone as many people don’t enjoy shore fishing. I kayak fish and will take a friend in my second kayak but often people aren’t interested (laziness?). Ice fishing is a different story; I have a group of guys who I go with 3-4 nights a week. FW hates that.

I’ve never tried the open seat section of the forum but would be open to joining somebody. It’s hard to ask for an open seat w/o feeling like a prick but I’ll bring the beer and keep my yap shut toast

My wife won’t fish with me anymore because I don’t talk to her when we are fishing. Well once I figured out what the fish want that day and start putting them into the boat I don’t say much to her. So…. most of the time I say nothing.

If I fish with somebody and they get their calculator out at the end of the day to figure out how much everyone owes it usually means there won’t be a repeat trip. In my experience, real friends trade hosting with no expectations. When you are on my boat, it’s my treat and I’ll even feed you.

My other rule for a good fishing partner is sharing rods on the boat. If one rod is the only hot rod that day there is no reason for one guy to go home skunked and unhappy.

Me too. Being retired, most of my friends still work and it makes getting out more of a challenge.

Open water, I fish 50% alone, 50% with brother and or uncle, occasionally my wife on nicer days. Ice fishing is probably 70% alone, my wife loves to ice fish so when she has a free day on a weekend, she comes with (ends up being 4 or 5 times over the winter), otherwise once a in a while my brother or uncle. I dont mind fishing on my own at all, just happy to be out there

I fish a lot 4-5 times a week. 80% just me 15% with the wife she likes to fish to but we work opposite shifts. The other 5% is with my mom she has a hard time getting in and out but it’s worth the time. I like to take newcomers out but surprisingly not many people want to go out. Mostly scheduling I think. I just like being out and figuring out what they want that day.

I fish with whoever, whenever I can. Especially since I’m between boats. Most of the time I fish with a couple of long time buddies, but I’ve jumped in with a number of IDO members. And they have all been good times, even when I fished with the infamous JD.

99.5% of the time I fish alone. Usually because it is a last minute decision due to work and family commitments. When I do have a partner it is a select few because i will not let just anyone in my boat. As others have said I hate someone who will not put the phone down or someone who does not respect your boat (dropping anchors and stuff). Love getting out with the family and love to take kids fishing. Wish my brother lived closer. We had some great fishing experiences as kids.

Well that could have gone without saying it. lol

I am in a fishing club and on out of town trips I fish with quite a few different guys. Some are a PITA others are fun to fish with. When I go on my own in general I fish a couple different people. We have all fished together for years, and we have a system down where we have it figured out who does what, and things normally go smoothly. One of the two, I always fish tournaments with. I did fish in a tournament with someone else in their boat this summer, and that was really fun, but I felt out of place not knowing what they wanted or expected from me.
