Fishing is Dangerous

Was jigging a #4 Rippin’ Rap today and hooked into a medium sized Pike.
Got it into the hole and my line snapped (6lb mono ya know?).
All I see is the beast with the $7 lure in its mouth starting to sink down the hole.
Pure reflex and my left hand lunges for the fish to try and save my lure.
I got the fish, but in a split second one of the treble hooks sinks into the webbing of my thumb.
    Crap.
My buddy removes the other treble from the fish’s lip so things don’t get really out of hand, but now I have a rippin’ rap dangling from my hand with no plan.
I’m able to get the lure off the treble that’s embedded in my hand but now what? I try cutting the hook with the Gander Mountain pliers I just bought but it doesn’t want to cut anything that thick.
After thinking about it I try again, only this time I slide the pliers in so I can cut the thinner parts of the treble, and I’m able to cut both of them with some effort.
    Now what?
Of course! I need to push the trebles through the other side. Sounds easy, right? Yeah, sure. Easy.
It hurts like hell to push at all so my son suggests icing it.
    Smart kid.
I ice it for a while. This helps. The pain is less.
    So I go for it.
I start pushing on one of the barba until I feel the point going out the other side. It fricking hurts but I grit my teeth and work it through until the barb finally comes out and I can push it all the way out.
That hurt, but it was out.
Now for the other one. This one is much worse. Much deeper than the other.
I ice it for a while and get the courage up to make a big push with the pliers, working it back and forth until the tip finally pops through.
I pull it out the other side with great relief, welcoming the bleeding that comes with it (Bleeding cleans the wound).
One the second one is out the pain is basically gone. I get the first aid kit and clean the wounds out and now I feel prety good.
    Back to fishing.
This is the second time this has happened to me.
    When will I ever learn?

Well if you fish long enough it’s bound to happen anyways. It’s a bugger when the bait is connects to both you and the fish gotta get if off that wriggling fish 1st like you did. As for the treble the quicker the better. I’ve backed several out myself when fishing alone and they came out quite painlessly if you do it good and quick. However I’ve also had a 2x embedded in my thumb. That one had to be cut and forced thru. That was painful.

I learned the “loop of line yank hard” method a couple years ago. I’m telling you, it is 100% painless and slicker than youknowwhat. I’ve done it to myself and had it done on me. Really unbelievably effective. Here’s a video. http://youtu.be/sKAAGWZskGg

I look forward to other people coming into the baitshop with hook stuck in X spot.

Lundojam’s suggestion works perfectly and once my victim..er customer gets past the “are you ready” part, well it’s all over.

On a side note, it there’s a tendon involved or you THINK a tendon might be involved, seek professional help. waytogo
