Fishing in Tulum Mexico

Has anyone done any DIY fishing in Mexico? I’m headed down to Tulum (just south of Cancun) in February and I am thinking about bringing some fishing gear. I’m staying in a beach house vrbo style where I have access to a kayak. So getting off shore wont be a problem. I was told that the barrier reef in front of the beach will have a lot of fish but don’t dare cross it at this time of the year as I might not make it back to shore.
I have zero experience fishing in the ocean and pretty ignorant about what to expect. I plan on bringing walleye/pike gear and letting ‘er buck.
Any suggestions or guidance would be appreciated!

Haven’t fished Tulum but I bring my pike spinning rod to almost every warm weather climate we travel to. 3000 series penn reel and medium heavy 2 piece rod. Usually a couple of times a year. Have fished Puerto Rico, Cabo and the keys quite a few times.

The kayak is key….get out early and bring plastics or some sort of crank baits. I usually buy some saltwater gulp shrimp and bring those down. 360gt search baits have been good to. I run 20# braid with an equivalent or heavier flouro leader.

I have always found the fish are sensitive to the line so the leader is import. White is my go to color to imitate most of the bait fish.

    Should be fun….good luck!
