Wondering if anyone uses gloves while fishing for protection. Stuck a treble hook in my finger today and that wasn’t very pleasant. Also get those little cuts when handling a fish. Any thoughts on brands and styles?

I’ve used Cabelas brand and Columbia for sun protection not fish or hook protection.

Gloves may not protect you against a hook point going deep but they really help in terms of preventing abrasions, protecting against fish teeth and of course the sun.

About 5 years ago before I wore gloves, my hands got pretty beat up one day lipping smallmouth on the river. Add in dirty water and I got a pretty serious staph infection.

So I bought my first pair of gloves (leading brand) and they didn’t last 4 months. Then got a pair of Fish Monkey gloves and they lasted 4 years until they finally came apart. I’d recommend them for sure – –

    They really do help…

I do not catch enough larger fish. I do not put my fingers into any fish’s mouth. I do not bring into the boat any not weakened fish. They just flop around with that treble lookin to hook anything. I unhook almost every 12″ plus fish in the net in the water. Pike are especially a treble hook in the hand. I Play them till no Death Rolls are done. Then I use 2 of those very long pliers that look lie a Colt pistol . The tiny 1″ clamp goes on to the hook in the mouth. 2 or more trebles in pike ? I use both long pliers.. I have had a about 50″ tiger Musky put 5 out of 9 BIG treble hooks under my left palm skin. Had no tools while walking, casting. 1/4 mile to the car. So I knelt down lightly on her. Could not get enough leverage to remove 1 of the SS 3 x stronger hooks with huge barbs. I am suddenly lifted up into the air. All 5 of the 9 hooks in the palm. I grab her tail & pull it quickly up to break her neck. She is limp. I feel instant sweaty shock start. I use each hook barb to tear open the hook hole large enough to back it out. After the 5th hook is out. I am ready to lay down and sleep. Toss her into the trunk and drive 15 miles to E R.
Nurse says I am super lucky I did not sever NERVEs. I realized telling her anything was useless. I asked for a chair. After cleaning all the holes.

DO NOT fish without a way to UNHOOK / CRUSH the trebles COMPLETELY DOWN trebles from any part of your body……ALONE…………..Walking or biking alone. You KILL the fish INSTANTLY KNEE ON the neck behind the gills. QUICKLY / instant movement. Fold the fish up to COMPLETELY BREAK the neck / back bone.

Wild fish are VERY VERY STRONG. 50 years ago ? I can still feel her lift me completely up and shake her head & drive lure hooks into my hand.
Favorite relaxed fishing IS IS very dangerous. Be prepared. I just realized that I needed a SHARP knife to cut open each hole a little larger to back out those hooks. I will put one in the tackle box & carry one when walking & fishing…….I used the big BARB to tear that tough skin open enough for each barb to back out.

When dealing with muskies I like to put on Lindy fish handling glove before I put my hand into the net. I know it has stopped me form getting stuck a couple of times. Just the right hand next to the teeth.

This is the same glove I use too. Only I use it on my left hand.

I have recently bought the Blackfish sun gloves for my bass tournaments. Handling the fish as much as you do for weigh ins and live well can really tear up your thumbs. They work very well, but as others have said, not gonna help against a hook.

I have some Fish Monkey – When I get hot I just stick my hand in the water and the gloves stay damp and keep me cool. I do the same with my buff. I wear both for sun protection more than hook protection. With the gloves and the face buff with my floppy hat I don’t have to wear as much sun screen on my face and hands. I have had stuff cut off both face and hands, so now I am pretty careful.

My fish monkey gloves are strictly sun protection not hook. I use my own common sense for hook protection

No not really. The older I get the harder the sun is on me.

I keep a pair of those latex or nitrile dipped gloves in the boat for grabbing onto northerns. They give you a good grip and would offer some hook protection but im also not catching monsters and usually use a hemostat for taking trebles out.

I wear full coverings rated at SPF 50 or higher. No messy repeat coats of greasy sun block. Only a tiny bit of my nose. About1 square inch is not fully covered. So far so good under the big bill of the hat & face covers. The gloves are great. No grease on everything. applause

Watch out you might get thrown under the bus for mentioning spf gloves. Clearly that’s not what the op was asking about 🙄

Do you guys lose some feel with your gloves? I am not a glove guy because I prefer to hold the rod and reel with my bare hands for the feel. Same when I’m hunting. I just prefer to go bare handed so I can hold the gun that way with better feel. Obviously when it gets to be a certain temp I do use gloves when hunting but I have never liked using gloves when fishing. Bear in mind I don’t fish when its super cold out either though.

The only time I wear fishing gloves is when I’m in the direct sun and I can feel it. I have been getting a sun rash on my hands and fore arms the last couple years. So instead of nasty oily sun screen hands I wear long sleeves and gloves. I don’t loose feeling I don’t think. But then again I rarely fish bright sunny days any more. I also hunt with no glove on my trigger hand and keep it in my pocket when cold.

No butthurt hear, that things squeezed shut. I didn’t take anything out of context. I was only joking about where my class came from when you pointed out he hadn’t mentioned sun protection at all. chased

While most gloves are not going to do much for hooks, they can help a lot with teeth and gill plates.

If I even get pricked by a sunfish dorsal fin, my hands swell up and itch like crazy and it doesn’t go away for hours.

Tournament fishing for walleye I always end up getting gilled at some point and the same thing. Swell up and itch.

I’ve been called a sissy for wearing sun gloves but have dealt with skin cancer already and I just turned 40.

Call me what you want but Protection is a thing for me. I do have a pair of Lindy Fish gloves which are great protection against gills. I usually carry them in the boat in case I get a big northern or accidental muskie.

But for the most part a pair of Cabelas Guidewear sun gloves or Huk brand ones work just fine for me. My cabelas ones are probably 4 years old and still show no signs of wear. I have forgotten then twice now and couldn’t get the same ones so I bought a pair of Huk brand ones that seem just as good. I plan on just leaving them in the boat now.

Most excellent Bear, just didn’t want anyone thinking anyone was sun glove shaming here, or just sun gear in general.

    Skim cancer ain’t no good
