Presently being recruited by a company in Tomah WI.

I kind of have my heart set on living close to excellent fishing but this is a good career job that requires consideration.
I’ve been focused on Stillwater because i love what the St. Croix has to offer and sturgeon is now open year round.

What fishing opportunities are near Tomah Wisconsin?

Love Sturgeon, FLathead, Channel cats…THen comes things like Muskys, trout, walleyes…

So what excellent fishing is near Tomah?

Petenwell and Castle Rock are great Walleye and panfish lakes. We got on a pretty stellar Eye bite a few winters back on tip ups for the show with IceAsylum, and Petenwell has been known to kick out some great crappies. I know they fish cats below the Castle Rock dam, and on both lakes, but don’t know much about it.

If you like channel cats, Petenwell is your new home. You can catch hundreds a day, well at least when walleye fishing. Excellent walleye lake with huge crappies. That doesn’t mean they’re easy to catch though. Those flowages can be humbling to say the least.

Yeah, it looks like your bigger water options are Petenwell/Castle Rock to the east, and the Mississippi River(pool 6 ‘above’ La Crosse I believe) about 40 minutes west. A LOT of backwater areas to explore down there. Not sure if your Sylvan is really outfitted for that or not though.

I know a guy who always talks about fishing for cats near Trempeleau and I’ve seen some big sheepshead in pool 6.

You won’t be far from Lock & Dam #7 on the Mississippi River near La Crosse.
It’s a great fishery for flatheads, sturgeon, walleyes and both largemouth and smallmouth bass. Excellent northern fishing too.

Don’t forget the cranberry marsh’s and the lakes on Fort McCoy ….miles of stream trout close by….channel’s and such on the LaCrosse river….Have to go to the Missip for flats….

    The possibility’s are endless grin

You can catch big channels, but 15-20 inchers all day every day. Tons of them through the ice. There are big flatheads in that system too, but I don’t fish them, and catch one ever few years on cranks. I know of a few guys who catch big flatheads in the Wisconsin River system between Petenwell and Castle Rock.

Flatheads are really making an appearance at the Petenwell Dam. About 45 minutes west you’ll be on pool 8 and about 25 minutes east you’ll have Petenwell, Castle Rock, and the Wisconsin River. I work just down the road from Toro at the Walmart Distribution Center.

This is great to hear. Sure looks like plenty of water in the area.
I’m having a hard time picturing another several years without a sturgeon fishery in my backyard though.

Well thank you all for your insight on the Tomah area.
    Appreciate the help as always!

Looks like a beautiful area to visit, but i do not think it is right for me.

I’ve been grinding my teeth all summer not getting over to the Croix more than once or twice for flatheads and sturgeon.

I’m going to scratch off any job offers that aren’t within close distance of the Croix/Sippi anywhere from Redwing to Prescott and up to Stillwater.
